This has already been a staggering year for cinema with Obsession, The Odyssey, and Spider-Man: A Brand New Day. This year is on track to compete with the box office records of 2019 with Avengers: Endgame, Little Women, Joker, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Movie releases show no signs of slowing down, with some of the year’s most anticipated picks still to come. Every month leading up to the New Year is packed with release dates, so below is the list of every film to add to your calendar. Within this list, we have a huge range, including horror, period pieces, the third and final Dune, and both the new Avengers sequel and Hunger Games prequel, so buckle up!
Released within the last month:
These films are brand new, currently running in theaters, and they’ve already received great acclaim. These are definitely worth squeezing into your weekend plans in the next couple of weeks before the October releases start hitting the box office.
The Uprising (Sept. 10-11)
Released on September 10th and starring the beloved Andrew Garfield, this film tells the dark story that inspired the famous Robin Hood fable. Set in 1831 in England under King Richard II’s corrupt rule, this film is gritty, emotional, dark, and action-packed. It stands at 56% on Rotten Tomatoes and has 2.8 stars out of five on Letterboxd.
Resident Evil (Sept. 18)
This new American horror film is adding immensely to what already was considered an exceptional year for horror in cinema. Based on the popular video game, Resident Evil follows a medical courier on a job to deliver a package in the snowy Rocky Mountains. This film actually serves as a reboot and is the eighth in a series of Resident Evil films, but it is bringing this franchise to the forefront with its immediate success. It has received a whopping 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and sits at 3.8 stars on Letterboxd.
Primetime (Sept. 25th)
This film is brand new and is the third out of four films Robert Pattinson has starred in this year. Despite his striking performance alongside Zendaya in the Drama this spring, and his success as Antinous in this summer’s Odyssey, there is seemingly no debate that this is his best role of the year so far. There is still much anticipation for this new antagonist role in Dune 3 this December, but some critics are convinced that his portrayal of Chris Hansan is Pattinson’s best work as an actor. This is an American Psychological Thriller based on the host of the controversial show, “How to Catch a Predator,” and will leave you in chills. With 87% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 3.7 on Letterboxd, this film can already be considered way above average even within one week of its release.
OCtober releases
Other Mommy (Oct. 9)
Many of you may remember the horrifying jump scare delivered by a contorted Jessica Chastain in the trailers for the Odyssey this summer. Well, the “Other Mommy” is back to haunt you this October 9th. This is a unique role for acclaimed Chastain and another striking addition to this year’s stacked horror portfolio. Get fully into the spooky mood with this one and try not to cover your eyes!
Sense and Sensibility (Oct. 16)
Daisy Edgar-Jones and George MacKay star in this new adaptation of Jane Austen’s beloved story of love and friendship. Get ready to reminisce on the spectacular wonder of Greta Gerwig’s 2019 Little Women as you gear up for another beautiful journey and portrayal of Austin’s timeless characters. The performances, set and costume design, and music are much anticipated and will no doubt leave you with an achy warmth in your chest. This is a striking shift from the terrors of Other Mommy, so there will be no risk of a lack of variety in your October watchlist!
Clayface (Oct. 23)
As an eerie body horror film based on a DC Comics villain, this is such a good Halloween wind-up pick. It is highly anticipated for the elaborate skin effects throughout the film, and it follows a previously rising movie star, Matt Hagen, and his fall from grace.
Klara and the Sun (Oct. 23)
Although this film is classified as a dystopian sci-fi story, Jenna Ortega’s portrayal of the life-like robot delivers a playful silliness to a genre that is typically heavy and bleak. Based on the powerful writing of Kazuo Ishiguro in the novel, Klara and the Sun, this film contains powerful themes of friendship, artificial intelligence, technology, and love. Again, the tone of this film is very contrasted to its release-day twin, Clayface, so maybe consider a double feature :).
November Releases
Ebenezer (Nov. 13)
For many of us, November first hits and the holiday season begins. While this might be a little premature, November 13th seems a perfectly reasonable time to begin celebrating, so how perfect that this brand-new adaptation of the beloved classic, “A Christmas Carol,” hits theaters mid-November. Johnny Depp is back and will be playing an eccentric Scrooge alongside co-stars Rupert Grint, Daisy Ridley, Ian McKellen, and Sam Claflin. Don’t miss this star-studded cast in this edgy holiday film.
Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping (Nov. 20)
This will be an incredible pick for November. I already see myself seeing it multiple times over Thanksgiving break with family and friends. Sunrise on the Reaping finally tells the story of beloved Haymitch and his iconic and historic games. Featuring a Noah Kahan song written especially for the film, captivating 1960s visuals and colors, and absolutely packed with drama and action, this Hunger Games shows no signs of disappointing its already greatly acclaimed film franchise.
December Releases
Avengers: Doomsday (Dec 18)
The Avengers are back, and after this summer’s release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, there is much anticipation and speculation around the reality of the New Avengers and what they will face. This will be Florence Pugh’s second of her three films this year, and she is on a hot streak, so don’t miss her performance as Yelena.
Dune 3 (Dec 18)
This is the third and final film in the groundbreaking trilogy Dune by director Dennis Villeneuve, based heavily on the science fiction Dune books by Frank Herbert. With an absolutely star-studded cast and incredible cinematography and thematics, this is one to look forward to and prepare for. The first two movies in the trilogy are an essential watch, or perhaps even a rewatch, to be caught up on the current position of Paul Atreides and the international and interplanetary politics surrounding him.
Werewolf (Dec 25)
Remember Nosferatu? Robert Eggers is back and is taking his dark, thrilling directing style to another level with this film. Witness Aaron Taylor-Johnson fight the battle between man and beast this Christmas Day as this chilling film closes out what may go down in the books as the year of horror in cinema.
Jumanji (Dec 25)
Always a crowd and family favorite, buckle up for another level of adventure and chaos as the world of the video game, Jumanji, collides with the real world and the game characters find themselves somehow outside of the game. Don’t miss the return of the beloved cast and their outlandish adventures this Christmas Day.
Don’t forget to rate all your films on Letterboxd this fall so your friends can see your thoughts:)
