Lipstick: A Girl’s Best Friend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

Some people say diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but as a broke college student who can’t even afford cheaply-painted fake jewelry, I’d like to disagree. Don’t get me wrong: I’ll take diamonds as a form of company any day, but they’re a rare commodity in the world of the overworked and the underfed, and I’m more willing to find alternatives than dish out the dough. Which brings us to the next best thing: lipstick.

Lipstick has become much more popular in the younger generation as of late, and I’d like to think it’s about more than looking pretty; it’s about being fabulous and taking the world by storm. Don’t believe me? Here are just a few examples of the magic qualities that lipstick possesses.

1. Lipstick demands to be noticed. Maybe it’s just me, but people who wear lipstick just pop out at me. It makes you stand out from the bare-lipped crowd. If you’re looking for a way to physically stand out but don’t feel like committing to hair dye or tattoos, lipstick is the way to go.

2. Lipstick doesn’t mess around. Do you know how long it takes to perfect the arches of the upper lip? Do you know the precision it takes to figure out which color not only matches your skin tone, but your entire outfit? Don’t mess with someone who puts that kind of dedication into anything they do. 3. Lipstick can be approachable. With the right shade, you can look happier, more open and more awake. It’s the perfect feminine touch, and it’s the perfect accessory to complete the ultimate Barbie look.

4. It can also be intimidating. What shade is this, you ask? I like to call it “the blood of my enemies. Face it, lipstick can make some girls look rip-your-throat-out fierce.

5. Lipstick leaves your mark. Ever since I watched a movie where a girl signed her name by stamping her lips against a piece of paper, I knew that was exactly the kind of thing I wanted to do with when I got older. It may not quite work like a signature in the real world (much to the dismay of my inner child), but you’ve got to admit there’s something alluring about the idea. Now I have a problem with getting it everywhere: on napkins, on mugs, sometimes on my sleeves if I’m not being careful. But what says “this boy is mine” better than a nice big lipstick stain?

6. It’s an instant confidence booster. There’s something about lipstick that just feels so right. It makes every outfit seem put together and chic. This is an example of when playing the part makes you actually become the role, because if you tell yourself you rock that lipstick, you actually will.
