Jazz up your ugly Christmas sweater look this year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

‘Tis the holiday season! I don’t know about you, but the thing I look forward to most during Christmas time, is not the festive feast of roast chicken and blueberry pies or even a peppermint mocha from Starbucks. Believe it or not, it’s not even the presents! It’s better than that: It’s the ugly Christmas sweater parties!

Unfortunately, on a college budget, splashing out $60 on an ugly Christmas sweater is quite unreasonable, especially if you are only going to wear it once.

So here are some cheap and easy DIY projects ideas you can do with supplies from your local thrift store, Walmart and Michaels.

  1. Sweaters

At an ugly sweater party, anything goes. So grab an old sweater you won’t miss and start decorating! You can create a Christmas tree by layering and ruching various patterned ribbons, or make a statement neckline flower wreath for a girly look. For something cool and different, try cutting up an old stuffed reindeer toy. Super gluing any leftover Christmas decorations (tinsel, baubles, lights) to your sweater also works.

  1. Skirts and Dresses

Even though it is technically a “sweater” party, you can also wear skirts and dresses. I particularly love the first look. Not only is it colorful and glamorous, it is also very cheap and easy to make. If you are not a fan of bling, subtle accents of tinsel around the neckline and length of the dress will also add that festive touch. For a last minute costume, you can also spice up an old plaid shirt by transforming it into a bow tube top. As skirts go, I love the last look. A chic skirt made from old Christmas shirts and sweaters anyone? Yes, please!

  1. Shoes

Transforming a shoe from normal to Christmas fab is super easy. All you need is paint, markers, gems, glitter, glue, Christmas themed decorations (think sleigh bells and mistletoe) and creativity!

  1. Hair & Accessories

What is cuter than Rudolph? Rudolph in your hair of course! Makeover your classic ballerina bun by adding antlers, eyes and a red pom-pom for  Rudolph’s iconic nose. If that is too tame for you, try the second look! Make sure you have lots of hairspray handy though! If you have shorter hair, try making a multi-sized, multi-colored bauble headband or necklace.

  1. Nails

You can never go wrong with glitter, especially during the merry festive season. If you are short of time, a quick swipe of a fast-dry glitter polish will instantly give your nails some razzle-dazzle. However, I challenge you to recreate the second, third and fourth look. All you need is a dotting tool, nail striper, tooth-pick and a lot of practice and patience.
