I Am All About Women Supporting Women, But Kaitlin Bennett Needs To Stop

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

My parents always told me as a kid that it is important to keep an open mind and listen to what others have to say before coming to a conclusion. They also told me that if I can’t agree with someone else’s opinion that is different from my own, then that’s okay, but I do have to respect it. I have always tried to live life like this, understanding and and respectfully accepting that not everyone is going to agree with what I have to say on certain topics and vice versa. However, there is one person who I can’t ignore or respect as she travels around shoving her microphone in other people’s faces and manipulating their words, and that is Kaitlin Bennett, also known as “gun girl”.

Today our country is more divided than it is united, and the main cause of that is the political chaos and whirlwind that started back during the 2016 campaign. Since then, it has only increasingly become worse. There are many factors that have played into this downward spiral from both parties, but I truly do believe that understanding each other’s difference of opinions and learning to compromise is the first of many steps in the right direction. So when people such as Bennett spew their very unnecessary hate all over social media, only blaming liberals for what is going wrong in the world, they only make the division bigger and more problematic.

This here is a screenshot of the caption and video Bennett posted on Twitter after Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed as a Supreme Court justice. This is simply a video of her shooting pumpkins that say “feminism”, “the blue wave” and “fake allegations”. This. Is. Not. Necessary.

Clearly emotions from both parties were running high during this fiasco and this little video did nothing but spread the hate and chaos. And by the way, Kaitlin, if feminism was destroyed, you wouldn’t be there holding a gun in all your ‘uneducated about the definition of feminism’ glory the way you are in this video. You’d be in the kitchen cooking and cleaning with the rest of us women where we would happily be telling you “I told you so”.

The tweet above is one that Kaitlin decided to post in the middle of the government shutdown. Let’s clear a few things up from this tweet. First, the only thing they were probably thinking was ‘let’s triple check her bags for guns since all she does is tell people that she’s carrying’. Second, once again, this is so unnecessary. Just let them do their job of keeping you and other passengers safe. Many TSA employees probably have their own families that they are trying to help provide for and probably don’t give a sh*t about you or your hat. Third… girl, do you not remember 9/11? To say their jobs are disposable and non-essential after that day is quite frankly just plain stupid. Not to mention, have you not turned on the news and heard about all the non-stop gun violence occurring in crowded places all over the country resulting in many innocent people getting injured or killed? Come on Bennett, be better than this.

This is another screenshot of a video that Kaitlin posted on her Twitter, Instagram and Youtube account. The night of this march, it was snowing hard and the temperature was in the teens as women and men peacefully marched for what they believe in, the right for women to have a say in what happens to their body (ridiculous that we are still fighting for that in 2019). This pastor allowed these marchers to take shelter from the cold as they warmed up inside the church. This man did not ever initially say that he was ever for or against what they were fighting for, but that he just wanted to give them a place to get away from the cold weather. Kaitlin relentlessly shoved a microphone in his face as she accused him of siding with “baby murdering”, not letting him get a word in, and eventually causing him to lose a little bit of his calm demeanor. She also shoved the microphone in the faces of several women in the church at the time, asking them ridiculous questions such as “How does it feel to know you support murdering babies?” When they silently respond by blocking their faces out of view of the cameras with their pro-choice posters, making a wall around them, she responds with “glad to see you’re in support of the wall” as she starts chanting “build the wall.” I don’t care who you are and what you stand for, but have some respect. Kaitlin has none of this in this interview as she puts words in the mouths of others who were either just trying to be good people by helping others stay warm or peacefully fighting for what they believe in.

My last point to this girl who I am trying to write this article about in the most respectful way possible: do not just go along with whatever our president is saying, or more likely tweeting, that day. You will not come out looking smarter than the rest of us. If you’re going to stand by Trump, that’s fine, but goddamn it, educate yourself (and then maybe educate him) on what global warming is and the difference between weather and climate. My boys Bill Nye and Neil Degrasse Tyson have tons of videos on this that will easily explain it to you.

These are just a few of the many outrageous posts that Kaitlin Bennett makes multiple times a week. Some of these other posts include shooting homemade posters that say ‘Happy Holidays’ on Christmas and bragging about being on Logan Paul’s podcast, two things that are not going to help your cause or make people believe you are a reasonable person. There was even one post that Twitter themselves removed for its targeted harassment.

People are entitled to their opinions and the right speak their mind, just as I am doing with this article. However, if you are going to do this, you need to be prepared for the fact that not everyone is going to agree with you. Responding to this by lashing out, being disrespectful and rude, putting words into other people’s mouths and trying to make them look stupid is straight up childish. It is throwing a tantrum over the fact that not everyone is going to agree with you and your opinions and you need to get the hell over it. So God damn it, sit down, take a chill pill and educate yourself too while you’re at it.
