Here’s my hot take of the week: A small party with friends/the pregame is always 10 times better than any frat party or bar outing.
Here’s why:
- You know everyone there (or somebody knows somebody).
There is always someone to talk to. Whether you’re hosting a group of people you’ve known for years or your friend dragged you along to hang out with one of her coworkers and his friends because she didn’t want to go alone, it is so much easier to actually talk to people. Part of that is because you can, you know, hear them. At a small party, you aren’t spending the entire night yelling “WHAT?” back and forth over the loudest speakers you have ever heard.Â
- You can actually get to know people.
You can actually have a conversation, meet someone new, and maybe even remember what they said the next morning. In a crowded bar, you can stand around and shout your name to other people for three hours, never having a meaningful conversation with just one person. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes that is all a person might need, but I prefer having conversations with someone. I like learning things about people, rather than walking on campus and seeing a familiar face but not knowing their name (due to the loud music) and not knowing anything about
them.
- The night feels more spontaneous.
In almost every apartment, there is always a quirk. Something that stands out right away. In my apartment, I have an American flag that is pink and white with a picture of my childhood best friend from sophomore year of high school on it. It was a gift (thanks, Sawyer), but ultimately I hung it up. Maybe other apartments don’t have a pink-and-white American flag featuring their owner’s high school best friend, but there’s almost always something that becomes a conversation piece. There are also games and random conversations happening. Someone may put on a throwback song that gets everyone groovin’. People always stay later than planned.Â
And honestly, there’s something elite about realizing at 11:30 p.m. that nobody actually wants to leave
