Alright; I need you to sit up, pay attention, and maybe even take some notes, because I’m going to give you a beginners course on how to layer for brisk Autumn weather. Your other professors may argue that Fall Layering 101 isn’t as important as some of your actual classes, but as a student walking around campus in the next upcoming weeks, I promise you that you’re probably going to be layering in some way or another. That huge sweatshirt you picked up off the floor that you matched with a scarf? Layering. Throwing on a jacket over your PJ’s while you secretly hope nobody notices you were too lazy to get dressed for your 8am? Layering. Choosing to wear your Northface vest for the fourth time this week? Well, you get the idea.

Although we’ve all been there with these kind of desperate and last minute layering choices, my goal for this lesson is to give you some easy to follow rules for successful layering. When you look good, you feel good, and that kind of confidence goes a long way when you’re a woman on campus.

With this first look, I think it’s important to point out that her dress and jacket are both the same length and that only one of them is patterned. The #1 rule I could give for any kind of layering is to choose pieces that don’t have large and awkward overlapping that catches attention at first glance. Plus, a busy patterned dress works in this outfit because it’s the only statement piece in the ensemble. A little pattern goes a long way.

Again, notice how in this look the jacket and the shorts both cut off at the same point. The statement piece is the metallic cross-body bag, which makes it so that there aren’t any other accessories needed. By choosing minimal patterns and darker tones, this layering look is simple and easy to replicate.

A majority of people give denim on denim a bad reputation, but I’m a firm believer that when done correctly, it’s a badass look that fits the fall aesthetic perfectly. The best way to do it is to mix a light wash with a dark wash, otherwise it’ll look like you’re wearing a denim jumpsuit straight out of the 70’s.

But what about layering for a going out outfit or night time? Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to be shivering cold all night in a cocktail dress. Pairing a cardigan or sweater with your favorite LBD and boots makes for a cool and urban night look.

Fall is the season of some of the best fashion, and layering is a huge reason for that. The possibilities are endless, and you never have to wear the same outfit twice. By following some of these basic rules, this season on campus will be one of your best yet.
