After Wicked part 1 cast a spell on audiences, fans are eagerly awaiting the next chapter in Elphaba and Glinda’s story. The upcoming sequel, officially known as Wicked: For Good, promises to bring the heart and spirit from act 2 of the well-known Broadway musical to the big screen. Here is a breakdown of everything we know so far!
Why Two Parts?
Director Jon M. Chu announced early in production that the Wicked adaptation would be split into two films. His reasoning was that the story is simply too big to fit into one. The Broadway show spans an impressive 2 hours and 45 minutes and the novel the musical is based on ranges from 432 to 500 pages long, depending on the print. By dividing the film, Chu and his team could give Elphaba and Glinda’s journey the emotional breathing room it deserves. Filming for both parts began in London in late 2022, wrapping in early 2024.
The official title and release date
The second installment is officially titled Wicked: For Good, taking its name from one of the musical’s most iconic, and my personal favorite, songs. It is scheduled to hit theaters on the 21st of November 2025 – almost exactly a year after part 1’s release. Universal confirmed that the one-year gap is intentional, designed to keep excitement high and to ensure the sequel gets a polished finish.
What will the story cover?
With part one’s powerhouse cast all set to return, fans are turning their attention towards what developments we will see in the land of Oz. If part 1 tracked Elphaba and Glinda’s unlikely friendship and their eventual split in the Emerald city – Wicked: For Good will cover the consequences. Expect to see Elphaba’s transformation into the so-called Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda’s rise into the ‘Good’ Witch – deepening the rift between them. Iconic musical moments such as “No Good Deed,” “As Long as You’re Mine,” and “For Good” are expected to be highlights. We also know of the addition of two new songs that do not feature in the Broadway show – “No Place Like Home” and “The Girl in the Bubble”. The sequel may also expand on moments only briefly touched on in the stage version, including Dororthy’s arrival in Oz.
Trailers and Teasers
With the final trailer’s release this past Wednesday, tensions and excitement for the film run high. In the trailer, we see teasers for emotional showdowns, the spectacle of Oz at war, and even glimpses of Dorothy’s arrival. The marketing leaned heavily on the emotional stakes between Glinda and Elphaba while also showing off dazzling visuals, choreography, and costumes that elevate the musical’s magic.
The Countdown Begins!
With the Wicked: For Good press tour rumoured to begin shortly, anticipation is higher than ever. Whether you’re a longtime fan of the stage show or newly enchanted by the films, one thing is clear: Elphaba and Glinda’s story isn’t over yet – and the magic of Oz is just beginning.
