6 Things Girls Do When They’re Alone After Dark

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

It’s tough being a woman. Just think about all the things you have to go through – being paid less than men, sexism in general, and societal standards. Every era has shown the oppression that women face; at one point, voting was only a dream – and yes, we can vote, but that doesn’t mean women have achieved equality. Til this day, there are still issues that need to be resolved, and every women should stand up for their rights.

One of the most predominant issues on college campuses is sexual assault. It’s important to be aware that it does happen, but that it shouldn’t.  Everyone should be free to go out without having concern. It’s not a women’s job to be afraid and protect herself; violence against women, or anyone, just shouldn’t happen. Unfortunately this world isn’t perfect and many things can occur at a moment’s notice.

When asked what each girl’s fear was in this situation, all came to agree that any source of violence was the cause of it.

Ciara, 18, states, “I think about how scared I am, and that I could be attacked at any moment.”

There are a few things you can do to ensure your safety – I’ve created a list with the help of my friend, Nykkoa.

1. Walk in well-lit areas.

Walk towards areas where you are able to see more.

2. Be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Sometimes, fear helps keep you safe; so it’s okay to check over your shoulder every so often.

3. Call someone.

This will make you less of a target, and whoever you’re talking to will know what’s up.

4. Hold your keys/phone in your hand.

This way you don’t have to stop to look for the item or call 911 if a situation does occur.

5. Tell someone that you’ll be out and that you’ll text them when you get back home.

If they’re a reliable friend, they will keep your safety in their interest.

6. Avoid being alone.

Stick with a friend so you don’t have to worry! The buddy system is always encouraged.

Although there is a list of precautions to take, women shouldn’t just settle with being afraid. In this era, it is your right to fight this injustice that has occurred one too many times. If you don’t stand up against violence, then who will?
