5 Tips for Back to School Breakups

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

Getting back in the routine of classes and homework is already stressful enough but throwing a breakup into the mix can be super overwhelming. For some reason, the beginning of the school year is always a time when relationships end. Maybe it is because of people needing to focus on school, they want to meet new people, or the transitional phase is just too much for relationships to handle. Whatever the reason why, something is in the air in Lawrence right now and couples are dropping like flies. Here is the tea: I, myself, am going through a breakup at the moment and I am in such a better place now but it is still hard, nonetheless. I am going to use my experience to give you guys some tips to get over it, and they might sound cliché, but trust me, they work! Because who needs to worry about irrelevant exes when we’re trying to get that degree, amiright ladies??

Tip #1 Cry it Out, Honey

It is a sad thing when a relationship ends and it is okay to be emotional about it because it does absolutely suck. Wrap yourself in some fuzzy blankets, make yourself comfortable, and just let it all out. Listening to your favorite sad playlist or putting on a movie that you know will cause some waterworks is a move. Just take it all in because bottling it up is going to make you feel worse in the long run.

Tip #2 Grab your Girls

Being around your girlfriends and venting and ranting about the relationship will always make you feel better. Spilling all of your thoughts while listening to some advice from your girls will give you some clarity and, hopefully, lift some weight off your shoulders. If you are missing your ex, hang out with your friends. If you want to text your ex, text your friends. Surround yourself with a support group of homies that can help you through your breakup so you’re not alone.

Tip #3 Do Whatever Makes you Feel Good

If that means going to Taco Bell and ordering half the menu? DO IT. If that means having a retail therapy day? DO IT. If that means going out to the Hawk and downing some Jayhawk shots? DO ITTT! (only in moderation, of course hehe) Do whatever makes you happy and don’t apologize to anyone. Or you can do what I’m doing and get a tattoo, but just a reminder, it is permanent, so don’t get something you will “ragret”!

Tip #4 Glow Up, Sis

Focus on yourself!! Just remember, it is okay to be single and it is important because after being in a relationship you can forget how to be independent and alone. Take some time for a little TLC and self-care so you can be back to your confident, happy self. Organize your room and your desk so you feel ready to go for your classes. Go get your nails done, go get a new haircut, and pamper yourself ‘til you’re glowing all over the place. Also, if you so happen to run into your ex, you look like a straight up baddie (but do not give them the time of day) and they’ll realize they lost a fine hunni.

Tip #5 It’s Okay to Move On

If you’re at the point where you have moved on and ready to get out there again, do not hold back! There is no measure of time when it comes to breakups, don’t think you are moving on too fast or too slow, it’s all okay. If a hot guy in your new class asks you out on a date, say yes! If you see some cuties at the bar, go up and make some moves! Be fearless and don’t let your ex or breakup hold you back from the things you want to do. At the end of the day, you shouldn’t rely on someone else to make yourself happy, so enjoy the new school year, and don’t let a breakup ruin your back to school vibes!
