5 Books that NEED to be Made into Movies Already

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.
We all love to read, and we all love to watch movies. What’s better than seeing our favorite written masterpieces finally getting played out on the big screen? Book/Movie-ships can either be the greatest thing, or the absolute worst thing to happen to your favorite story. But when it’s done right, there’s no denying that seeing characters bring a book to life isn’t one heck of an experience. Because of this, I decided to make a list of 5 books that NEED to be made into movies already. (Also, if you haven’t read any of these, highly recommend if you’re in need of a good book.)

5. Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher

If you were ever a hormone raging middle school girl, then you have most likely heard of, if not read, this book. I personally read it when I was going through the “my life sucks and nobody understands me” phase, and I must say that this story really helped show me a different perspective on the consequences of suicide/bullying, especially among teenagers. At one point there was talk of a movie, but its been several years now and I’m yet to see anything come of it. LET’S GET TO IT, ALREADY.

4. Crank by Ellen Hopkins

This is actually a series of three, Crank, Glass, and Fallout, about how drugs have completely destroyed a family inside and out, all starting with a teenage girl making bad decisions. How fitting, right? There is actually a non-profit organization trying to get a launch on filming a Crank movie, but alas, no results have ever come of it. While the books are a little different (and when I say different, I mean dark) from your average story, there’s no question that the movie would be fantastic if it was done right.

3. Nineteen Minutes by Jodie Picoult

You’d think with all the shootings happening the last few years, this book would have found its way into the motion pictures somehow. It gives insight on multiple perspectives when a tragedy like that takes place, which would send such a strong message to society. (Also the amount of down right bawling that would take place in theaters). If any book needs to become a movie right now, it’s definitely this one.

2. A Child Called “It” by Dave Pelzer

We’ve all read it, we all know it, and we all loved it. There’s no denying that. While tragic and heartbreaking, this book would make one amazing(ly sad) movie. Not to mention the fact that, because the book is a true story based on the author’s life, it would bring about some amazing recognition to the realities of child abuse happening right under our noses. So come on, Hollywood, get this one in motion!

1. Wicked by Gregory Maguire

Finally, the number one book that absolutely, without a doubt, NEEDS to be made into a movie. I know what you’re thinking, and yes, this is the same famous Wicked that has it’s own Broadway show. What many people don’t realize is that it was a book first. Though they are both similar, they are also vastly different. Clearly, considering the raging success of the Broadway Musical, this story is loved by people everywhere. SO WHY HAS THERE NOT BEEN A FILM ADAPTION YET?! Obviously the story line is amazing. Seriously Hollywood, we’re all waiting. GET. IT. TOGETHER.

Sincerely,

AN IMPATIENT BOOK NERD
