5 of the Best Breakfast Spots in Downtown Lawrence, KS

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

I’ve only ever met one person who doesn’t like breakfast food and I’m not even sure that really happened. Or maybe I’m just a sucker for the smell of eggs and pancakes in the morning, and I know I’m not the only one. Lawrence has rather slim pickings as far as breakfast establishments go. Most are chain restaurants and just subpar. So I’ve created this run-down of five of the best local breakfast spots in downtown Lawrence that will not let you down.

The Roost

The Roost has a little bit of everything: a bakery bar, a coffee bar, an actual bar and a menu filled with everything from eggs benedict to a potato pancakes to crafted sammies.

The pancakes are top notch, if I do say so myself. The bakery bar is always filled with the most delicious looking pastries I’ve ever seen, and I doubt any of them would disappoint.

Among the drink selections, it offers six different bloody marys and a list of coffee cocktails to get your morning started. Oh, and the coffee. You have to try the coffee. Not to mention its story is a little heartwarming: it was Kickstarter-funded by the community.

920 Massachusetts Street

Open 7 a.m.-3 p.m. daily

Wheatfields Bakery

Wheatfields sets quite the standard for bread. It has roughly 19 varieties made in-house: ciabattas, baguettes, you name it.

Its breads are handcrafted and hearth-baked daily in their wood-fired brick oven. I can’t go there without leaving with at least one loaf.

The breakfast menu ranges from frittatas to breakfast tacos, and they’ve got a line-up of pastries too.

904 Vermont Street

Open Monday-Friday 6:30 a.m.-8 p.m, Saturday 6:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m., Sunday 7:30 a.m.-4p.m.

Milton’s Café

Milton’s is a great place to meet for conversation over coffee (and food of course).

From breakfast wraps to smoked salmon bagels, you can’t really go wrong. You’d better get there early because these local breakfast places tend to fill up fast.

It’s got quite the beer selection too, which is great for a brunch situation.

901 New Hampshire Street

Open Monday-Saturday 7 a.m.-3 p.m., Sunday 8 a.m.-2 p.m.

715

715 is a go-to European-style brunch destination. It’s your place for morning cocktails and a hearty meal.

Whether you lean towards a classic egg breakfast or a potato pizza, there is something to satisfy you here.

It offers more variety for a group of brunch-goers. 715 is the perfect place to take your parents during their next visit.

715 Massachusetts Street

Opens weekdays at 11A, weekends at 9A

Ladybird Diner

There has been a lot of buzz about this little establishment since it rolled in last year. It’s menu offers exactly what you think a diner would offer but better.

Rumor has it that Ladybird is the home for some type of hangover cure (the Slinger, some kind of hash brown-burger hybrid mated with chili-cheese-eggs), so this may be your place the next time you down one too many. Also, word around town is that the pie is to die for.

It has a few alcoholic beverage options lined up for you too.

721 Massachusetts Street

Opens 7 a.m. daily
