30 Minute Meals That Don’t Break the Bank

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

We’ve all been there – you have a huge midterm tomorrow, you work tonight, and can barely look at Ramen noodles you’ve made them so much this week. With little time to cook and eat and even less money to do it with, cheap and quick meals are a necessity for college students. Here are a few ideas for the next time you’re in a pickle food-wise.

Spaghetti is easy to make and the only thing that takes time is boiling the water. All together, the ingedients are about $10 (noodles, sauce, meat, garlic bread, cheese).  The great thing about spaghetti is that you are bound to have leftovers, which will save you time and money for meals later in the week, too.

Hamburger Helper is also an easy meal to make.  This mix costs around $2 and a pound of meat is around 2-3$ depending where you buy it.  Personally, I like the Velveeta Cheesy Skillets better than the original Hamburger Helper. A quick meal that is easy to make in bulk with your roommates or keep the leftovers for yourself.

Grilled cheese and tomato soup is a necessity with this cold weather we’ve been having.  It only costs around $7 for the ingredients and you’ll have bread and cheese leftover for deli sandwiches later in the week.  For a fun spin on this traditional meals, try grilled cheese rolls!  They are just as easy to make and will spice up your mediocre Tuesday night of studying.

Make your own pizza bagels! All you need is bagel sliced open and toasted topped with pizza sauce and shredded cheese (and whatever fancy toppings your heart desires). It costs around $5 depending on the toppings you add.

Breakfast for dinner! Breakfast essentials like pancake mix, french toast and waffles are easy to make and cheap. They also double as breakfast on Sunday – two meals in one!
