17 Signs You’re a Social Work Major

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

1. Every time someone asks you your major, their response is “Well, it’s certainly needed” or “Good for you.” Like, thanks?

2. Everyone thinks that Social Workers = Baby Snatchers.

3. Constantly having to defend your profession.

4. Every time a friend or family member comes to you with a problem, you immediately start practicing the strengths perspective in your head.

5. You’re the token therapist among your group of friends.

6. Almost every conversation you have with people circles back to you explaining “Intent vs Impact” or “Equality vs Equity.”

7. Aw, you have a five page paper due for your class? That’s cute, try 20 pages due on a bi-weekly basis.

8. Reading. Reading. Reading. SO. MUCH. READING.

9. Performing free employment-based labor 20+ hours a week is a literal requirement for you to graduate. Because who needs to work for actual money, right?

10. People constantly tell you that you won’t make any money.

11. You haven’t totally come to terms with the fact that they’re probably right and you most likely will not make any money.

12. Family holidays with your conservative relatives end in political battles (that you refuse to lose).

13. Constantly being told you chose an “easy” major and just looking at them like:

14. Exams? What are those?

15. Wherever you go to school, your Social Work program is probably tiny and you all consider yourselves a little family.

16. Social Justice isn’t just a buzz word on Facebook, it’s your entire life.

17. You wouldn’t choose any other path in life.
