10 Things to Do on Valentine’s Day Other than Dinner and a Movie

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

Let’s be real, we’re all tired of the same old “dinner and a movie” tradition that is Valentines Day. Why not spice it up with something different? Here’s a compiled list of ideas to get you out of that boring date routine!

1. Ice Skating

Okay, so you’ll probably never reach the level of cuteness that is Pam and Jim, but honestly, who can? This idea is a perfect excuse to hold your date’s hand and cozy up for warmth. What could be better?

2. Bowling

Yeah, it’s not the most glamorous of ideas, but this is a cheap and fun way to do something different! Besides, nothing is better than being able to laugh at yourself after striking out four times in a row (speaking from experience), or better yet, celebrating your victories when you manage to hit a pin.

3. Karaoke

Who doesn’t love kareoke? This is a perfect chance for you and your partner to show off your singing chops (or lack thereof) with some fun couple songs or a  Beyonce power ballad.

4. Cook Dinner/Bake Together

Are you more of a home-body couple? Then this idea is perfect for you and your sweetie to have an intimate night together. Plan a fun meal to make together, set the table with some candles and music, and just enjoy each other’s company without the pressure of having to secure a reservation or deal with the outside V-Day hype.

5. Go to a Ceramics Shop

Um, hello, have you SEEN Ghost? Does it get more romantic than this? Not really. This is a great idea to do something on the creative side. Find a ceramics shop that will either let you make or paint your own ceramics and have fun with it. Sunfire Ceramics in Lawrence is a great place for this!

6. Take a Painting Class

If you liked the creative idea but ceramics aren’t your thing, go to a canvas painting shop! Painted Kanvas in Lawrence is a personal fave of mine for this particular activity. And the best part? You get to drink as much wine as your little heart desires while you do it. How can that ever be a bad thing? Like, ever?

7. Wine Tasting

Speaking of wine, this idea isn’t only romantic, but it’s something to splurge on that you can’t do just any other day. Wine tastings are a fun excuse to do something out of the ordinary while feeling classy and posh with your valentine.

8. Art Museum

Speaking of classy (and cheap), taking a stroll through an art museum to admire some beautiful works of art is the epitome of class. Nothing can bring up a romantic mood like experiencing beautiful artwork together.

9. Comedy Show

If you and your partner love to laugh (who doesn’t) then surprise them with tickets to a comedy show! This can be a special experience for the two of you, and you’re guaranteed to have loads of fun. Who needs the stress of fancy restaurants and food you can’t pronounce when you could spend your night laughing?

10. Volunteer at a Soup Kitchen For the Day

If you’re one of those people that dislikes the idea of Valentines Day altogether, or you’re more interested in spending your V-Day doing something meaningful, you should spend it giving back rather than avoiding it! Help make this day special for those that need it more than you do. Jubilee Cafe in Lawrence would be a great place to do just that!
