Pick It or PICK IT

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kenyon chapter.

Right now at the top of this page there’s an advertisement for Yoplait yogurt that tells you how many calories you save when you swap one container of Yoplait for various side-dishes. Don’t get me wrong, I actually love yogurt (if Yoplait still makes the white chocolate raspberry flavor, they good in my book). And, as the daughter of a diabetes nurse specialist, I’m very aware of how important nutrition and exercise are. But everyone knows that our society puts women under constant pressure to look good, and the widespread judgment of our diets is, I believe, less about nutrition and more about a discouraged body image. Almost every magazine marketed towards women these days features a “Pick It or Skip It”-esque blurb telling you what you should and shouldn’t eat—not in terms of protein or other important nutritional values, but simply in regards to calories (for example, you could eat one burrito from Chipotle, OR you could have a fist-sized portion of carnitas, a few corn chips with guacamole, AND a Corona!).

Women of Kenyon College, now that Halloweekend is officially here and treats are rampant throughout our great nation, I decree that it’s time for Pick It or PICK IT. I challenge you to take this list of delicious items and run with it–see how far you get between now and Sunday night.

1. Cookie Pie at Peirce and/or Cheesecake from the VI
2. Papa Johns and/or late-night food cart
3. Reese’s pumpkins and/or five fistfuls of candy corn
4. A “Ghost in the Graveyard” and/or a “Berry Scary Martini” (say what you will, Martha Stewart knows what’s up:

5. Deli breakfast and/or Deli breakfast

Caroline Black is a senior Drama major at Kenyon College. In addition to co-founding and writing for her school's HC branch, Caroline is co-president of Beer and Sex, Kenyon's student-run freshman orientation program (and she enjoys making jokes about that title as much as you do). When she's not doing hippy-dippy acting warm-ups or volunteering with her service organization, The Archon Society, Caroline enjoys watching "Parks and Recreation" and dismaying her friends with terrible puns.
