Ohio’s Finest Frozen Treats

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kenyon chapter.

Now that it’s finally starting to feel like spring, it’s time to start talking about things we love the most about the warm weather. Most importantly: ice cream. With all the hype surrounding Whit’s coming to Mount Vernon, let’s not forget about all of the other world class ice cream Ohio has to offer. If you haven’t already (and even if you have), make some time to check these places out:

  1. Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream: 714 N High Street, Columbus, OH 43215 (there are other locations, but this is the closest)

The Short North district in downtown Columbus is known for its boutiques, bars and art galleries, but it’s also home to Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream. Recognized as having some of the best ice cream in the country, Jeni’s offers twists on the classic chocolate and vanilla, but goes all out with avant garde flavors too, including seasonal specialties. Queen City Cayenne, Wildberry Lavender, and Pistachio and Honey are just a few of the signature flavors that keep customers coming back, so it’s perfect for the adventurous eater. Be warned though, for “two half scoops” (which is not much at all) you’ll be shelling out $4.50.

  1. United Dairy Farmers (UDF): 10 North Sandusky Street, Mount Vernon, OH 43050

Let’s be honest, a combination convenience store/ice cream parlor sounds pretty shady, but UDF is home to some of the best malts and shakes around. It started out as a small dairy in Norwood, OH in 1938 but has expanded to many locations throughout Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. They offer classic flavors like Mint Chocolate Chip, Mini Cookies ‘N Cream and Butter Pecan. If you’re up for a quick study break with your friends, the UDF in Mount Vernon is less than a 10-minute drive.

  1. The Dairy: 300 Wooster Road, Mount Vernon, OH

The Dairy prides itself on being one of Mount Vernon’s best-kept secrets, and for good reason. They offer cones, shakes and sundaes that come in an impressive 88 flavors. But if that’s not enough of an incentive, you can make a meal out of your trip with nachos, fries, soups and sandwiches. And it’s cheap: a one-dip cake cone will cost you a whopping $1.75 and a burger’s just $1.50.

  1. Graeter’s: 147 Easton Town Center, Columbus, OH 43219 (there are more throughout Columbus)

If you’re in Columbus and looking for some classic ice cream, check out Graeter’s. Like Jeni’s, Graeter’s is known across the country for their amazing ice cream, but unlike Jeni’s, they stick to more familiar flavors. The Graeter family has used the same French Pot process—making only two gallons of ice cream at a time so it’s extra creamy—since they opened their first store in 1870. If you want to try some but don’t have much time, try getting a pint at the Market.
