Well collegiettes, Family Weekend is long gone and now is our chance to look back and reflect.  Campus was overrun with proud parents walking hand-in-hand with their Kenyonites, and I must admit that more than once I was overwhelmed with emotion, for my own progenitors were unable to attend. Yes, I am part of the minority of students whose parents could not attend Family Weekend– either due to distance, money, or plain lack of affection. As a freshman, this is an especially hard hit because it’s my first time actually living away from home. However, not all is lost – some parents (including mine) decided to show their affection even from a distance.

Here’s what some of my friends’ parents decided to do to show their Kenyon spawn they still love them:

1) Inês Forjaz de Lacerda, ’17.

My own parents sent me a novel by one of Portugal’s most famous writers, Victor Hugo Mãe. Inside, they both wrote personal messages to their favorite daughter, and, as always, reminded me to do my work/go to the gym/not to eat too much (little do they know I’ll need those extra pounds for this coming winter.

2) Morgan Harden, ’17.
Joining in on the gaggle of lonely orphan frosh this weekend was Morgan (she lives in my hall, so shout-out to the Gunderworld). Morgan’s parentals sent her a super big package filled with all sorts of goodies, including her favorite peanut butter cookies from a bakery back home in Charlotte, NC. They also included assorted cheese and chocolates, which I can only assume made my hallmate very happy.

3) Schuyler Vanderveen, ’17.
Though originally from Laguna Beach, CA, Schuyler’s family has recently moved to Germany – and as all our other fellow Europeans know, the cost of a trip to the US of A is just way too expensive. So the Vanderveen clan had a little Skype get-together (no doubt with an Oktoberfest theme in mind) and Schuyler’s parents made sure to book rooms at the Kenyon Inn for next year.

So there you have it. And for those of you whose parents made the trip: your parents may have taken you out for food somewhere other than Peirce and they may or may have not bought you clothes and the like, but let’s not forget that, in the end, I received a book.
