As February has started settling in, we cannot deny that Valentine’s Day is coming. It is a day when those with significant others gush and celebrate and anyone single bemoans that fact.  But why bemoan such a fun holiday? And why should the term “significant other” apply only to someone you feel romantically about? There are lots of significant people in your life; From your best friends and your family to yourself, there are lots of people to celebrate Valentine’s Day with besides a romantic partner.

Celebrate Your Friends: Whether your friends are also single or are in a happy relationship, Valentine’s Day is a great time to show your friends how much you love them. Who else is with you through all of the ups and downs of college? Who lets you cry on their shoulder when a guy breaks your heart or you get a bad grade on a paper? Who do you celebrate your accomplishments with and have crazy fun nights with? Living on our own in college, our friends here become our support systems, and we so often forget to appreciate them properly. This Valentine’s Day, show some love to those who have really made a significant impact on your time at college.

Skype Your Friends From Home: When life is so busy, it’s easy to forget to keep in touch with the people who got you through high school. Get (virtually) out of the Kenyon bubble for a little bit by talking to your friends who are at other schools or are still in high school. You can reminisce about old memories and keep each other updated about your life in college. Valentine’s Day is all about spreading the love, so why not spread it beyond Gambier to those you love around the country (or the world)?

Call Your Parents: When was the last time you talked to your mom or dad? Who has supported you since birth and has loved you longer than anyone else? I’m sure your parents would be delighted to get a call from you this Valentine’s Day. Parents are another group of people who simply don’t get the appreciation they deserve. This Valentine’s Day, make their day by calling to say how much you love them!

Take Care of Yourself: With schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and friends, it’s easy to put your own health and comfort on the back burner.  This Valentine’s Day, take some time to appreciate and take care of you.  Go have a great workout, listen to your favorite song, watch an episode of your favorite TV show, eat a special treat, or just do something that makes you happy. (Editors note: OR go to the Norah Ephron movie marathon in Gund Gallery’s theater!) Be your own significant other. This Valentine’s Day, don’t forget to love yourself

There are plenty of people with whom we can celebrate Valentine’s Day, so enjoy this February fourteenth, whomever you’re celebrating with!
