Grrrl Power: An Empowering KAC Playlist

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kenyon chapter.

I’m an avid KAC-goer. Every morning by 7 AM, you can find me in the weight-room pumping some iron – with my headphones in, of course. I love working out, and part of my daily motivation is knowing that I have an awesome playlist to wake me up and get me excited every morning. I call this my “Grrrl Power” playlist, and it’s a lifesaver in a world where a lot of workout songs are catered to men. So, I have decided to share this playlist for your personal workout pleasure.

Don’t be like Usagi (Sailor Moon). Working out should be enjoyable!

1. “Girl on Fire,” by Alicia Keys.

Time to channel your inner Katniss Everdeen. Train like you’re training for the Hunger Games!

2. “Fighter,” by Christina Aguilera.

Working out should be something you do for yourself, but sometimes a little external motivation can go a long way.

3. “Run the World (Girls),” by Beyoncé.

This choice is obvious. Who run the world? You! …after your weekly cardio session, of course.

4. “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!,” by Shania Twain.

Because it is incredibly awesome to own who you are and have fun regardless of what anyone else thinks.

5. “Independent Women Pt. 1,” by Destiny’s Child.

An obvious choice. All of the benefits you get from working out are earned from your hard work and dedication. And you do it for yourself!

6. “Bootylicious,” by Destiny’s Child.

You can never have enough Destiny’s Child in the mix. Of course, it’s great to be healthy – but looking (and feeling) good is a fantastic benefit!

7. “Fight Like a Girl,” by Emilie Autumn.

This lyric speaks for itself: “There are more of us than there are of you, so show me your worst!”

8. “Woman (Oh Mama),” Joy Williams.

This is an incredibly soulful song, which I enjoy amidst the high-powered tracks of the playlist. It’s all about the beauty of being a woman: “I am the universe wrapped in skin.” I couldn’t agree more!

9.  “Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves,” by the Eurythmics and Aretha Franklin.

You can do whatever you want, inside or outside the gym! “We’ve got doctors, lawyers, politicians too.” Channel your inner Hillary and finish this work-out strong!

10. “One Woman Army,” by Porcelain Black.

Time to cool down: you’re leaving the battlefield (or, the gym) with a few scars (read: sweat) but you came out of it stronger and ready for battle another day. Good work!

I hope this playlist motivates and empowers you during your time at the gym!
