This week’s campus celebrity comes from the Kenyon administration! We at HCK were lucky enough to sit down with Hoi Ning Ngai, the newest Dean of Academic Advising and ask her a few questions about her job, Kenyon, and life in general
Name: Hoi Ning NgaiTitle: Dean of Academic AdvisingHometown: New York, New York
HCK: Tell us a little about your job.HN: “When people ask what my job is about, I say I’m a consultant. I consult with staff and students. It’s tied to the student experience…How to help students become more critical thinkers.”
Best Thing About Kenyon?“The best thing about Kenyon is the way we connect and how supportive the people here are of one another. I think people here are always thinking about how to make each other better so that we can make the community better.”
You teach a KenyonFITT Class: tell us a little about that and how you got started with it?“I was not very active prior to grad school. During my first year at UCLA graduate school, I was looking for opportunities to get connected to UCLA, and to focus on overall self-improvement. I found the Fitness Center at UCLA [through their Fitness Leadership program] to be a great opportunity to get to know people. I also wanted to work on my stage fright, [and] what better way to do so than by standing in front [of a class] teaching others to be better versions of themselves? It’s not just about looking good. It’s about being empowered and having physical and mental wellness.”
Advice for Kenyon Students?“My best advice is to be thoughtful and reflect on your choices, about why you’re in college, why you’re at Kenyon, why you take the classes you take, why you’re friends with the people you are friends with. Be deliberate and intentional with how you spend your time. Seconds pass by quickly, and it’s our loss if we don’t appreciate them.”

Many Students have a “Kenyon Bucketlist”. What would be on yours?“I want to learn to fish in the Kokosing. I want to take a class at the Craft Center. I want to check out the stars at the planetarium [Miller Observatory]. I want to go to a home game for each of the sports teams, And I want to take a class from each department.”
