I don’t know how many times I have come across lists both online and in magazines telling me what I should have in my closet. As soon as I start reading, the hopelessness sets in, because these lists are LONG. Black pumps, nude pumps, pencil skirt, three white tops, black sweater, dark-wash jeans, light-wash jeans, slacks; the list goes on and on!
In my opinion, every woman should wear exactly what she wants. Only a few things will always be in style, anyway. Those few things however, I recommend investing in to have and love forever. Read on for a list of timeless classics that should always be in your wardrobe!
1. Classic blazer: A sleek, neutral blazer is an item that should always be in a woman’s wardrobe. Whether you’re pairing it with a nice pair of pants for a professional meeting or throwing it on over a floral sundress to provide a bit of contrast, blazers scream class. In fact, Coco Chanel (the queen of class) often receives credit for popularizing women’s blazers in the 1920s. They are still relevant today, too –Princess Kate’s many stylish looks shows us the true versatility of a simple blazer.
2. Little Black Dress: We all know that having a black dress is a must. They make it onto all must-have lists and garner so much love that they even have a nickname. Simple and classic, the LBD can compliment any body type, because you have so many choices! Slinky and fitted, twirly and textured, or plain and simple, everyone can find a little black dress perfect for her personality.
3. Statement Necklace: When I hear “statement necklace,” I think of the rows upon rows of bright, chunky, plastic necklaces at Francesca’s. This fad is bound to pass, right? Maybe, but looking back at style icons through the years, statement necklaces pop up all over the place from Coco Chanel’s strands of long, tangled pearls to Audrey’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s bling. Having a pop of color or texture can compliment the neckline and dress up an otherwise simple look.
4. Dark shades: Functional and fashionable, a pair of quality dark shades will never go out of style. Grab a pair of cat-eye shades for a retro flair, aviators for the beach, or (my personal preference) Ray Ban wayfarers for a classic look. Of course, there are countless articles matching face shapes with sunglass styles, but my advice is to go with whatever the hell you want. This accessory again provides an outlet to make an outfit your own! Na-na-na diva…
5. Confidence: So maybe this isn’t exactly something you can order online or try on at the mall, but it’s been an essential part of being a poised, classy woman throughout the years. Look at Grace Kelly, Katharine Hepburn, Twiggy, Jennifer Aniston, and Beyoncé. All of these strong women make their style their own. Whether that means jeans, sundresses, fedoras, or (maybe?) ball gowns, wear whatever makes you feel like a queen.
This list of course gives an excuse to take a study break and online browse. Hey, Tobi.com almost always has 50% off site-wide sales and Nordstrom has free shipping and returns!
