4 Things I Want to Bring Back from the 90s

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kenyon chapter.

This Halloween, tons of Kenyonites were dressed in the style of our favorite TV shows from the 1990s. With nostalgia in my heart, I decided to list out what else I miss from this decade! Here are four things I wish I could bring back from the 90s:

1. Film camera and print photos

This summer I took pictures with a disposable film camera I bought from Walmart. I could’ve taken pictures on my phone – and I did, of course – but I wanted the satisfaction of winding the wheel, pressing the button and hearing the click. In today’s day and age, almost everything is built towards instant gratification. I can take a picture on my phone, see how it looks and share immediately. However, waiting for the pictures to get developed is like waiting for a gift or a package from Amazon, and the grain in the pictures make it so much more nostalgic.

2. My Gameboy

Long before I had a boyfriend, I had my Gameboy. Me and my Gameboy use to be inseparable. I remember excitedly going into Gamestop and buying the latest Pokemon game. Back then, the hardest decision I had to make was whether I should buy Pokemon FireRed or LeafGreen. My Gameboy kept me company during boring family parties, long road trips, and dull school nights. I grew quite attached to it, but sadly, I lost my Gameboy, along with all my free time to spend on playing video games. If you’re out there, know that I am always thinking about you and I long for your return.

3. Nameplate Necklaces

Having a nameplate doesn’t really make sense, if you think about it. I mean, how likely is it that you’re going to forget your own name? Maybe it’s more for other people than for yourself, but in any case, would you want complete strangers to know your name or even forgo the classic “Hi, my name is…” when meeting someone? In that event, you might as well just point to your necklace when someone asks you what your name is. Even if it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, I still think it’s cute. It reminds me of my days in public elementary school when all the cool girls wore theirs around their necks; even I had a metal nameplate to match my metal braces. Ah, those were the days.

4. R&B Music

My go-to Pandora station is none-other than 90s-00s R&B. You simply cannot go wrong with Usher’s “Confessions”, Mario’s “Let Me Love You”, Alicia Keys’s “If I Ain’t Got You”, T.I.’s “Why You Wanna”, and, of course, Destiny Child’s “Bootylicious”.

It’s weird to think that the 1990s and early 2000s were more than 10 years ago. Growing up, I use to think about what it would be like when I’m in college. I use to think college was so far ahead of me, but here I am now, reminiscing about the days when I use to take pictures on a disposable camera, play on my Gameboy, rocked a nameplate and braces and listened to Alicia Keys on my Walkman. Maybe I want more than just the things I had in the 90s/00s, maybe I just yearn for my childhood. At the age of 18 (as of today!), I realize, if you’re not careful, time can pass by in a blink of an eye. So, it’s always worth remembering the little things that once played a role in your life, no matter how small.
