10 Ways to Treat Yourself for Free

As the weather grow colder and exams loom over our heads, I find myself looking for new ways to treat myself. Because the options here in Gambier are limited (and often expensive), I’ve spent a while compiling a list of completely guilt-free, money-free ways to indulge.

1. Read for pleasure. This helps balance out longer required reading or problem sets. Reading for pleasure can also give your brain a break from dissecting every word. When I read for pleasure, I turn on the Christmas lights in my room and put on some low-key music. It works well to wind down at the end of the night.

2. Take a walk outside. A little sunlight can help boost your mood, and the exercise seems like less of a chore when you’re outside. I like walking on Wiggin Street towards the elementary school, or on the gap trail. If you’re up for a short drive, check out Ariel Foundation park in Mount Vernon.

3. Make yourself a playlist. You can make a playlist for walking to breakfast in the morning, for working out, or for studying. Creating one is a relaxing way to feel productive.

4. Block out an entire hour to have a meal with a friend, without your phones. This doesn’t have to be off campus! Sometimes it seems indulgent and rewarding to simply spend time with each other without distractions or stress.

5. Write down a list of positive things that have happened to you recently. This practice of gratefulness can make you feel better about a stressful week. For a confidence boost, also list positive things that you have accomplished, no matter how small (think clearing your desk or finishing a subject of homework).

6. Make tea or hot chocolate in your dorm room. This can become a great five-minute break between homework subjects, and works as a great, non-messy study treat.

7. Paint your nails. Taking time to paint your nails seems like a luxury sometimes, but it can also work to take a step back from whatever you’re up to. Plus, I feel a little more put together and in charge of my life when I have painted nails.

8. Write an encouraging note to a friend or roommate. You’ll feel accomplished, and they’ll feel great! There is never a bad time to appreciate those around you. Notes of encouragement work especially well during tougher weeks like midterms.

9. Do yoga. The KAC has great yoga classes, and going there will let you enjoy suggestion number two on this list… twice! If you want to stay in, you can also look up yoga exercises online, and even stretch while you do your homework.

10. Do something creative! Draw, sing, write, or dance around your room. It doesn’t have to be great, and no one ever has to see it, but having some time outside of assignments and expectations to explore what you like to do can feel rewarding and reduce stress.

Whatever you do, remember that taking a moment of stillness can help you tackle the next tough project. You don’t need to feel guilty about taking care of yourself. In fact, when you feel rested and content, you can begin to take care of other people.
