10 Ways Finals Week is Like a Doomsday Movie

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kenyon chapter.

It’s coming. Quickly. And there’s nothing you can do about it. In a few more weeks, Finals Week will take over your life.

In reality, Finals Week probably isn’t as big of a deal as we make it out to be, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less stressful. After all, finals usually make up a large percentage of our overall grades for classes. Plus, we’re always anxious to get them over with. They’re the last barrier between us and the relative freedom that comes with summer!

Given the general feeling of unease associated with Finals Week and the short amount of time left before we need to start preparing for our impending doom (if you’re not preparing already), I think it’s worthwhile to consider the ways that Finals Week is like a doomsday/apocalyptic/disaster movie. These types of films all deal with the end of the world as we know it, so it’s a fitting comparison, right?

1. Picture it: a Sunday morning. You wake up to the sounds of birds chirping. You notice a few gentle rays of sunlight peeking from behind the blinds covering your window. You stretch and reach for your phone. Then you see it. The notification that shatters your blissful morning awakening: “Finals Week tomorrow.” That stomach drop and urge to moan in agony is akin to the hopelessness I imagine you’d feel if a giant tornado were rushing right toward you.

2. You knew this day would come, but you never took the time to prepare. You always told yourself you had plenty of time left!

3. Tensions run high, and your emotions start to get the best of you.

4. Your world seems to be falling apart.

5. But then, a moment of hope appears. You can handle Finals Week. You’ve been through it all before! You just need a plan. No final exam, essay, or project is a match for your willpower and intelligence!

6. You rush to the library, fighting the crowd of stressed-out students for the best study spaces.

7. But right when things are starting to look up, something inevitably halts your progress. Your stress builds into frustration and anger. Why can’t things just go smoothly for once???

8. In the end, you persevere. Maybe a friend gives you some helpful advice or words of encouragement to help you along.

9. By the end of the week, you’re counting down the remaining minutes until you complete all of your exams. It’s the final stretch (pun intended).

10. When it’s finally over, you are relieved. You made it. You survived another semester, another Finals Week. Time to break out that “Yeah. That’s right. I AM a boss” look, pack up, and drive off into the warm, welcoming embrace of summer vacation.
