10 Things I Learned From Amanda Bynes and Miley Cyrus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kenyon chapter.

I’m sure that by now everyone has seen Miley Cyrus’ infamous dance routine at the MTV Music Video awards last month (we see you, Robin Thicke), and clearly a lot of people have seen her Wrecking Ball music video. I’d like to bet that anyone who’s been active on social media this past year has also most likely caught a snippet here or there about Amanda Bynes’ descent into insanity.

No matter how much we pretended to dislike the Disney Channel, we’ve all seen an episode of Hannah Montana – and I know we’ve all been to a sleepover where we saw She’s the Man. Regardless of these two ladies’ weird behavior during this past year, the truth is that they both used to be really hilarious and successful – for the right reasons. Here’s a list of life lessons I learned from Amanda Bynes and Miley Cyrus during my childhood:

1. When you’re a teen popstar, it’s okay to be sassy – and even if you’re not being constantly followed by millions of adoring fans, don’t be afraid to let your inner diva out every once in a while.

2. If you’re really passionate about something, go for it. Especially if it means pretending to be your twin brother while he’s conveniently out of the country – and especially if his roommate is Channing Tatum.

3. Don’t be afraid of being brutally honest with your friends. Sometimes they just need that little extra shove.

4. It’s okay to care about your looks.

5. It’s also okay to not give a damn

6. If you can look good as both a blonde and a brunette, then your life is basically made.

7. There’s a reason why that guy never called you back. But don’t worry; it’s not you, it’s him.

8. Some things won’t always turn out the way you wanted them to. But there’s always this solution.

9. When in doubt, bring in the dancing lobsters. All of your problems solved, guaranteed.

10. Regardless of what anyone else tells you, you can always get the best of both worlds.

She spent this past summer interning as a writer with both The Daily Meal, a digital media group  dedicated to "all things food and drink" and The Borgen Project, a non-profit organization that partners with U.S. policymakers to alleviate global poverty. Before entering the "real world" of jobs, however, Ally spent many summers as a counselor at an all-girls summer camp in Vermont, aka the most wonderful place on earth. A good book, a jar of peanut butter, a well-crafted Spotify playlist, and a lazy dog could get her through even the worst of days.
