Winter Fashion: What you Need to Stay Warm

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kent State chapter.

Kent read, Kent write, Kent feel my toes as the winter weather spreads across campus. On a campus full of fashion majors, I do not doubt that people will be making the trek to Rockwell in a dress and heels. I; however, will be in layers upon layers and boots. This winter, keep yourself warm in style. With the right boots and scarf, your walk across campus will be both fashionable and toasty.

First, the boot. Ditch the Uggs and swap them for one of the best selling Sorel boots. Founded in 1962 in Canada, Sorel focuses on functional fashion. They not only value ethical, sustainable manufacturing practices, but they will keep your feet warm too.

Joan of Artic Boot

This now-classic silhouette features beautiful waterproof full-grain leather and suede upper with a removable recycled felt inner boot to ensure that feet stay warm, dry and comfortable in cold, winter conditions. They now come in neutral colors such as black, shale (gray), tobacca/ sudan brown (brown) and nori (army green).

Caribou Boot

Often imitated but never equaled, the original Sorel boot features waterproof construction, seam-sealing and a removable ThermoPlus™ felt inner boot for warmth, comfort and protection in cold and wet winter weather.

I bet you thought that the scarf was done reinventing itself, but you were wrong. There’s the traditional scarf, blanket scarves, infinity scarves, and then there’s the snood. This winter’s must haves are the blanket scarf and the snood.

What is a snood, you ask? As seen on the runway, the snood is the hottest new winter item that promises to keep you warm. The word snood seems to be a combination of scarf, snow and hood. Snood, as defined by Google, is a “tubular piece of knit fabric that covers the entire neck and can be pulled up over the head to be worn as a hood as an attractive fashion statement.” So, it’s basically a thick scarf that you can pull over your head.

Athleta is an athletic wear company owned by Gap. They sell all the workout necessities, but the only thing you need this winter is their fleece-lined leggings. They will keep your legs warm while walking through the wind tunnel they call Risman Plaza, and they fit just like a normal legging: there is no extra bulk, just extra warmth.

Polartec 2 Tights and Stretch Pants

These are your typical tights with the added bonuses of thermal insulation, four-way stretch and plush back comfort. You can wear them alone, or as a base layer for around town.
