Why Valentine’s Day is This Serial Singleton’s Second Favorite Holiday

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kent State chapter.

Valentine’s Day can be a real sore spot for single people, so why am I not included in that? I’ve never had one Valentine’s Day in my nineteen years on this planet spent with anyone I was romantically involved with (unless you count first grade where my “boyfriend” gave me a kiss on the cheek- I remember you, Johnny).

So why do I get so excited every February to see couples pelting each other with cheap chocolates and outrageously large teddy bears holding hearts?? I don’t know!! I just do! I love it!

Here are my reasons for loving Valentine’s Day, despite my single status:

Chocolate

This is my personal Valentine’s haiku for chocolate:

Oh, sweet Chocolate

I adore you forever

Be my Valentine?

Please don’t get me started on chocolate covered strawberries. I’ve written numerous poems about those, too.

Chocolate is just so perfect! My favorites are the Lindt mini pralines: oh my god they’re incredible. Trust me: they’re sooo good.

I love heart-shaped literally anything.

Like seriously, look at these super cute Colorpop blushes?? Adorable!! Marketers sure know what they’re doing when they make literally everything they can into a heart shape: I’ll buy it! Every time!

did someone say rom-coms? i’m in.

As someone whose middle school favorite movie was The Notebook, (yes, I was a very emotional kid, let’s not talk about it), I will always be down for a romcom. Notting Hill? I’m in! How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days? You’ve got Mail?? Fifty Shades of Grey???? Um yeah, I’m so down.

who doesn’t love love?

This is a rhetorical question, so don’t come at me you cynics.

warm my heart in this freezing ohio winter <3

Candles and plushies and candies, oh my! My frozen heart melts whenever I see people get so excited for Valentine’s Day. All the pink, warm, fuzzy feelings, and flowers really make me happy.

So there you have it, all of the things that make Valentine’s day fun, even for those who aren’t in a relationship. If you are sad about being alone Valentine’s day, make happy plans!! Treat yourself to brunch, or your favorite candy! Get together with your friends and sob over a movie!! Put on makeup for no one but yourself! Listen to Taylor Swift and live vicariously through her. Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be a miserable holiday for single people, so have fun and make memories!

Now, just because you are single this year doesn’t mean you will be next year. Or maybe you’ll manage to snatch someone up on the 14th, who knows!! Have fun, love love and have a good Valentine’s Day :)
