Why my dog is my hardest goodbye

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kent State chapter.

Last year when I left for college I was so excited to start over and make new friends. Nothing was holding me back, but this year turned out to be the opposite. While I was still looking forward to moving into my new apartment and getting to see all of my friends I soon realized I was leaving behind my best friend. Some of you may be thinking I’m talking about a boyfriend or my mom, but I’m actually talking about my four-legged best friend, Holly. So here are some reasons why my dog is the hardest goodbye:

When people say they grow up fast, they mean it.

These pictures are only five months apart. It’s crazy, I know.

Your roommate won’t run up to you when you get home.

Nothing makes me happier than my dog running up to me like she hasn’t seen me in days even if I’ve only been gone for five minutes.

The best cuddle buddy in the world isn’t there when you need her.

No one gives better cuddles than your dog, hands down; Even though they take up the entire bed.

You can’t call someone “Peanut Head” without getting a weird look.

We all have those crazy names we call our pets and we aren’t even sure why we called them that in the first place. In my defense her head is the color of a peanut right? Okay maybe I am crazy, but she’s my peanut head and that’s all that matters.

The hardest part of all, you miss being around them.

Whether you vent to them when you’re having “one of those days” or you like to take a million pictures of them, realizing you aren’t able to do the little things like that anymore is definitely the hardest part.

Even though not seeing my dog every day is tough, I think we can all agree that the best part about coming home after being away for a while is the moment when they hear your voice and see you. They run as fast as they can to jump all over you and attack you with kisses because they’ve realized their best friend is finally home. That moment is what gets me through those tough days and it’s what I look forward to the second I say goodbye to my dog.
