The Top Fashion Statements Made at the 2021 Inauguration

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kent State chapter.

It was a spirited day full of happiness, bliss, relief and jewel tones. The ladies of democracy came out to the 2021 Inauguration giving us the FULL fantasy.

Vice President Kamala Harris

VP Harris stepped into her role as Vice President wearing the long seen bipartisanship hue of purple. The dress and matching jacket was designed by two young black designers, Christopher John Rodgers and Sergio Hudson.

She stands tall in her black pumps being sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

FLOTUS Dr. Jill Biden

FLOTUS Dr. Jill Biden is a breath of fresh air in her head-to-toe blue coat, dress, shoes, gloves and matching mask, of course. Dr. Biden’s Dress was embellished with Swarovski crystals that go elegantly with the velvet cuffs of the tweed jacket she wore atop. This ensemble was designed by Alexandra O’Neill.

Former FLOTUS Michelle Obama

Mrs. Michelle Obama…oh my god. She went out today and stole the show. Move over Barack, your wife is here.

Wearing the color of the afternoon, purple, this muted raspberry version of the shade dazzles on this pantsuit and coat designed by Sergio Hudson.

Former FLOTUS Hillary Clinton

Rounding out our purple reign is former FLOTUS, Hillary Clinton. Clinton joins the Obama, and VP Harris in wearing the combination of the Democrat Blue and Republican Red.

Clinton’s, monochromatic ensemble was designed by Ralph Lauren.

Amanda Gorman

The breakout star of the event has to be nonother than poet Amanda Gorman. While Gorman spoke the beautiful words of her original poem “The Hill We Climb,” she stood bright and tall dressed in Prada that featured a long sunshine yellow coat, white poplin shirt, black skirt and a statement-catching red headband that accented her gorgeous natural hair. The 22-year-old even included a piece of jewelry given to her by Oprah Winfrey.

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga arrived to sing the national anthem to start out the day. She was outfitted by Daniel Roseberry in a fitted navy jacket that was embellished with a dove of peace brooch that went out into a large red silk skirt.

Jennifer Lopez

Singing a medley of “This Land is Your Land” and “America the Beautiful” JLo belted the inspirational lyrics in head-to-toe white Chanel styled by Rob Zangardi.

All white has been a statement that VP Harris also made on the night she delivered her acceptance speech. This color is long been a hallmark of the Women’s Sufferage movement.

BONUS: Bernie Sanders

You didn’t think I was going to write this and NOT mention the meme-worthy photo of Senator Sanders???

Senator Sanders is giving us, “this could have been an email” realness and “Let’s hurry this up I have places to be” elaganza.

The star of Sanders’ outfit is his mittens. These extra comfy and cozy looking mittens that were handmade by Jen Ellis a second-grade teacher in Essex Junction, Vermont. According to the Washington Post Ellis, “cuts up wool sweaters that are no longer being used and sews them together in various combinations on a machine her mother gave her. She then lines them with fleece made of recycled plastic.”

On the day of January 20, 2021, the sun shined and there once again was color in the capital. I will leave you with a quote from President Biden, “We’ve learned again that democracy is precious. Democracy is fragile. And at this hour, my friends: Democracy has prevailed!”
