The Reclamation of the Met Gala

The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus.
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kent State chapter.

The Met Gala is back in full swing this year, reclaiming its iconic position of the first Monday in May after being canceled in 2020 and pushed back to September in 2021. This reclamation did not disappoint.

The theme this year was part of the two-part “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” that started last year, but this year’s focused theme was Gilded Age.

Now, did even ten people follow this theme? Absolutely not. Celebrities can’t read.

So while I’m going to make a best and worst dressed list, you have to be aware that no one followed the theme, so they get bonus points if they (miraculously) did dress like the Gilded Age, but the whole score isn’t based on whether or not they were on the theme.

Without further ado, here are my worst and best dressed from the 2022 Met Gala, in no particular order!

Best Dressed

Blake Lively in Versace

This dress will go down in Met Gala history, along with all of Blake’s previous looks. This woman can do no wrong. Ryan, you wore a regular suit. No comment.

Bonus: Blake going to the afterparties in this gorgeous dress

Kendall Jenner in Prada

This is my personal favorite look from the night, I loved the frills and the gorgeous mesh top. I was so pleasantly surprised to see Kendall top my best-dressed list!

Billie Eilish wearing Gucci

I love this gown, and Billie gets a billion bonus points for being on theme. Congrats, Billie.

Olivia Roderigo in Versace

SOUR dreams.

Alicia Keys in Ralph Lauren

Stunning!

Normani wearing Christian Siriano

This look is incredible.

Dakota Johnson in Gucci

She looks regal. I love her so much.

Bonus: Dakota ditched the robe for the Tom Ford afterparty and looked spectacular

Sydney Sweeney in Tory Burch

Sydney looked like an angel at her first Met Gala.

Jessica Chastain in Gucci

This blood-red was very popular at this gala and I love it. The Gucci snake makes this look.

Kim Kardashian in Marilyn Monroe’s Jean Louis dress when she sang “Happy Birthday” to JFK.

I’m just glad Kim didn’t wear the head-to-toe spandex bodysuit again this year. It was nice being able to see her face. I also love the bleached hair!

Thomas A Doherty in Dior

THEME!! LOOK!! A MAN IS ON THEME!! literally unheard of.

Iris Law in Moschino

She looks ethereal!

Dove Cameron in Iris van Herpen

This dress is an absolute dream. I’m obsessed with it.

Anitta wearing Moschino

This look is simply stunning. I love it.

Worst Dressed

Kylie Jenner in Off White

Because this is an homage to Virgil Abloh, I really, really wish I liked it. However, I do not. Not even a little bit. The baseball hat???? I have no idea what’s going on tbh.

Bonus: Kylie in Off White for the Afterparty

WHY DIDN’T SHE JUST WEAR THIS ALL NIGHT. I DON’T UNDERSTAND.

Gigi Hadid in Versace

Gigi usually hits the mark for her Met Gala outfits but this year… the mark wasn’t even in sight.

Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker in Thom Brown

You know it’s bad when you have to explain what was going on on Instagram. This is hideous.

Emma Stone and Sophie Thompson wearing Louis Vuitton

Two negatives do not equal a positive here. Just bad bad bad.

Bella Hadid in Burberry

Both Hadids on the worst dressed list I am CRYING.

Bad Bunny in Burberry

I have no idea what’s happening here, nor do I want to know.

Cara Delevingne in Dior

Yikes.

Camila Cabello in Prabal Gurung

Why?

Anna Wintour in channel (left)

Anna, I don’t understand how you picked the theme and still didn’t adhere to it. Also, why would you wear Chanel??? Chanel can never pull off a red carpet look, even I know that and I’m not the Vogue Editor-in-Chief. Figure it out, please.

The Met Gala is my favorite fashion night of the year, and this year was incredible. I’m so glad the gala is back on track on their regular day, and I’m going to manifest that Rihanna shows up next year (cries).

Now I just have to wait another 364 days until the next Met Gala so I can judge everyone again :)
