Great news for “Star Wars” fans, as of Sept. 22, 2026, the newly opened Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles celebrates the power of visual storytelling.
Designed by Ma Yansong, the museum features galleries exploring timeless themes: family, love, work, play, fantasy and more. Additional spaces are used for two state-of-the-art cinematic theaters and a dedicated area for learning, dining, retail and events (lucasmuseum).
For “Star Wars” fans, the museum provides an opportunity to explore the artwork and creative process that goes into George Lucas’ most recognizable stories.
The museum’s collection illustrates the different ways visual art can be used to tell stories, providing visitors a look at the ideas and artwork that could eventually evolve into characters, worlds and films.
More than Just “star wars”
While “Star Wars” is the most recognized story from George Lucas’ career, the museum doesn’t just prioritize a single franchise. Throughout the campus, the galleries explore visual storytelling across different types of art and media.
This allows visitors to discover artwork connected to animation, illustration, filmmaking and other forms of visual storytelling that make up your favorite stories.
The museum additionally provides an opportunity for visitors to experience storytelling through film. With two major cinematic theaters, it shows everything from early silent films to avant-garde experiments to animation and even documentaries.
The campus also includes spaces for educational programs, events, dining and shopping, making it more than a traditional art museum experience.
why george lucas created the museum
Instead of creating an art museum strictly focused on the “Star Wars” franchise, Lucas wanted to create an experience celebrating all variants of visual storytelling across all different forms of art.
Lucas began collecting art while he was a student in college. Over the course of 50-plus years, Lucas’ collection included over 40,000 works.
This space provides an opportunity for illustrators, cartoonists, muralists and recognition of other artists in a museum setting. The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art allows these different forms of art to be displayed alongside more traditional works, demonstrating how images can tell stories and connect people across generations.
a new destination for fans
For longtime “Star Wars” fans, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art offers a unique way of experiencing the stories they grew up with and love. Rather than only seeing completed films, visitors can also explore the artwork and creative ideas behind visual storytelling and how they bring these stories to life.
Whether you are visiting for the “Star Wars” exhibit or simply interested in art and filmmaking, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art provides visitors with an opportunity to see how visual ideas can become stories brought to life on screen.
