Today my hair is in desperate need of a fresh color! I’ve been dying my hair pretty regularly since about January of this year, and it’s about time again where my hair needs some serious TLC. I dye my hair about every 5-6 weeks, depending on how fast my roots grow out and the color fades. Before dying your hair you want to make sure your hair is unwashed and product-free like mine is here!

My favorite color to keep my hair as is a beautiful deep maroon-purple. My hair is naturally a medium brown shade, so dark colors like reds and purples take really well into my hair without bleach. It’s been about 5 weeks since I dyed my hair last and it’s time for it to get a revamp! I picked up the color “deep intense violet” by Loreal Feria, my favorite hair dye brand. Click the image to see where you can purchase Loreal Feria products! They also have a super great website to help you find exactly what you’re looking for. Without further ado, lets get into it!

Don’t forget your gloves!

Almost every hair dye set comes with gloves included just like mine did. I’m super lucky to have my own sink and bathroom in my dorm so that’s where the magic will be happening! I make sure to put down paper towels (newspaper works great, but we’re improvising!) because I tend to get dye EVERYWHERE! Below you can see what is included in the kit I’m using. Everything is super simple and easy, just follow the instructions carefully! For those of you who have never dyed your hair at home before, you have to mix the color yourself. All the products in my kit are number and it’s super easy to mix it all together.

Remember to shake well!!

Once you have your color all mixed up and gloves on, time to get coloring! I always wear an old shirt that I don’t mind getting dye on and you can put an old towel over your shoulders to decrease mess. Old button-up shirts are best for hair dying since you don’t have to pull them over your head! Another little tip is to put some conditioner or Vaseline along you hairline and on your neck and ears. This makes cleanup super easy because any dye you get on your skin in these areas can be easily wiped off! To start the dying process, follow directions given in your kit. I start at my roots as directed and slowly work to the ends of my hair. I use the tip of the bottle to get close to my scalp and then use my fingers to work the color in. Directions advise that you do a test on a small piece of hair first to make sure you get your intended result and make sure you have no irritation from the chemicals! I skipped this step since I have used this kind multiple times, but always be aware of any burning or discomfort, it should NOT hurt! I continue to work the dye into my hair with my fingers and typically begin to squirt the dye into my hair once I get to the ends of my hair. I take my time to make sure I fully saturate all my hair and really work the dye into all of it. Once the dye is in, time to wait!

My dye that I’m using takes 25 minutes after application to fully develop. After clipping your hair up, kick back (away from anything you don’t want dye on!) and admire your beautiful self. Once the time is up, all that’s left is to hop in the shower!

Washing the dye out is definitely the most nerve wracking part, especially because this color makes my shower look like a crime scene! Following my instructions, I rinse the color out initially, getting the majority of the physical dye in my hair out with just water. I then use the shampoo and conditioner provided in the box to get the rest out, shampooing twice and applying a hefty coat of conditioner. This definitely takes a while to get all the dye out and you may have quite a bit of hair come out as well (I promise you wont be bald!) After my shower I choose to blow dry my hair just because I like to see my results immediately, but air drying can prevent further stress to your hair. Below is my after picture! I’m extremely happy with the results as always and I’m super excited to rock my fresh color! Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone and try something new, your dream hair could be waiting in the drugstore!
