Have a Headbangin’ Summer Vacay

More festivals exist beyond Coachella. Here are some of the best summer festivals close to Kent. Rock on!

1) Bunbury Music Festival

Where: Cincinnati, OH

When: June 1-3

Lineup: Jack White, The Chainsmokers, Post Malone, Foster The People, Young The Giant, Magic Giant, Blink-182, The Front Bottoms, LANY, The Wrecks AND MORE! 

Ticket Prices: $79-$450

Why: No other festival will offer you such a wide range of genres and places to get your face painted! Cincinnati’s finest artists and vendors show up to make the great time a GREAT time.

2) Firefly

Where: Dover, DE

When: June 14-17

Lineup: Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Arctic Monkeys, The Killers, Lil Wayne, Logic, Foster The People, Portugal. The Man, MGMT, SZA, Cold War Kids AND MORE!

Ticket Prices: $329

Why: The lineup speaks for itself. This festival offers camping grounds too, so you never have to leave the festival!

3) LaureLive 2018

Where: Russell Township, OH

When: June 9-10

Lineup: Foster The People, Fitz & The Tantrums, X Ambassadors, Magic Giant, Cold War Kids, Brandi Carlile AND MORE!

Ticket Prices: $25-$115

Why: All of your favorite indie pop bands will be in one place conveniently close to Kent. This relaxed festival let’s you tailor who you want to see and prices it accordingly!

4) Lollapalooza 

Where: Chicago, IL

When: Aug. 2-5

Lineup: TBD! Past lineups have included Chance The Rapper, Muse, Arcade Fire, Lorde, 6lack, Foster The People and others!

Tickets: TBD! 

Why: More information will be coming out March 20. This show is always a fan favorite, and it has some of the most talented musicians in the world to headline. “Lolla” has been strong since 1991 and plans to treat every guest to the Chicago life. All I can say is whoever is on this lineup will be WORTH IT!

 

5) Mo Pop Festival 

Where: Detroit, MI

When: July 28-29

Lineup: Bon Iver, The National, Portugal. the Man, St. Vincent, Vince Staples, Highly Suspect, Brockhampton, Daniel Caesar, Billie Eilish, Alvvays, Turnover, Rex Orange County, lovelytheband AND MORE!

Ticket Prices: $75-$380

Why: Indie pop’s finest will be in Michigan at a fine price for your pleasure! (My personal favorite act here is the up and coming lovelytheband, who has a fabulous single called “broken.”)

6) Rock on the Range

Where: Columbus, OH

When: May 18-20

Lineup: Avenged Sevenfold, Alice in Chains, Breaking Benjamin, Stone Temple Pilots, Code Orange, Machine Gun Kelly AND MORE!

Ticket Prices: $169.50

Why: Headbang your heart away at the premiere summer festival for all your rock and heavy metal needs! Where else are you going to get to mosh?

7) Vans Warped Tour

Where: ALL OVER THE US! 

When: ALL SUMMER

Lineup: Mayday Parade, The Maine, Waterparks, Every Time I Die, 3OH!3, Sum 41, Taking Back Sunday, All Time Low, Simple Plan, We The Kings AND MORE!

Why: Warped Tour holds a special place in every emo kid’s heart throughout the nation. This is, unfortunately, the last run of this particular tour, which has been around for 24 years. Don’t miss out on a fun day full of all your favorite music from high school. Take a nostalgic emo trip!

8) Pitchfork Music Festival

Where: Chicago, IL

When: July 20-22

Lineup: Ms. Lauryn Hill, Fleet Foxes, Chaka Khan, The War on Drugs, Courtney Barnett, Earl Sweatshirt, Syd, Julien Baker, Blood Orange, Kelela AND MORE​!

Ticket Prices: $75-$375

Why: 40 acts over three days and the chance to explore the city? Count me in! These acts are relaxed, alternative rockers who will give you a sense of nostalgia no matter your age. 

9) Electric Forest 

Where: Rothbury, MI

When: June 21-24; June 28-July 1

Lineup: Bassnectar, ZHU, The String Cheese Incident AND MANY MORE!

Ticket Prices: $255-$700

Why: If you’re into sick EDM beats, glow sticks and getting WEIRD, this is the place for you! Also, if you’re an aspiring DJ, this is your heaven!

10) The Peach Festival

Where: Scranton, PA

When: July 19-22

Lineup: Umphrey’s McGee, The Revivalists, moe., Pigeons Playing Pingpong AND MORE!

Ticket Prices: $60-$590

Why: This dynamic festival is known for its perfect delivery of all things folk music, and it is nestled in Montage Mountain. Save money by camping near the concert venues and meet other music fans. Montage Mountain is also home to a water park open and available for all four days. (If you’re lucky, you may just run into Michael Scott and Dwight Schrute!)
