Fun Road Trips to Take this Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kent State chapter.

Summer is the perfect time to link up with some of your closest friends and go on an adventure! Road trips are always an interesting experience and will leave you with stories for years to come. So grab your GPS, snacks, and cash then hit the road! But first things first…figure out where you’re going!

New York City (6 hours and 40 minutes from Kent)

New York is arguably the greatest city in the world and definitely something everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime. Try to make a trip to every borough; each has a really different vibe. From Times Square to the Statue of Liberty, there are endless amounts of things to do in NYC.

Pittsburgh (1 hour 30 min from Kent) and Hershey, PA (3 hours from Kent)

Pittsburgh is an incredibly cool city. Attend a Pirates game at the best ballpark in the country or check out one of the many museums in the downtown area. Hershey, PA, is home to a surprisingly awesome amusement park. There are tons of wild rollercoasters, thrill rides and other entertainment.

Detroit (3 hours from Kent) and Chicago (5 hours 40 minutes from Kent)

Detroit, also known as Motor City, often gets a bad rap. However there are a lot of great things the city has to offer. There are many must see museums such as the Detroit Institute of the Arts, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, and the Motown museum. Detroit also has a lot of great, cheap restaurants to check out. Chicago is the 3rd largest city in the country, so obviously there’s a ton to do. A shopping spree on the Magnificent Mile is a must. Also, if you’re there in early August, you can go to one of the coolest music festivals, Lollapalooza, in Grant Park.

Louisville KY (5 hours from Kent) and Nashville TN (3 hours from Louisville)

If you’re looking for a taste of the south, Louisville and Nashville are two cities you should visit this summer. Louisville is home to the Kentucky Derby, which takes place in May. There are also caverns that you can go zip-lining in if you’re looking for a thrill. Nashville has tons of live music every night, just take a walk and you’ll find something fun to do. This is also a great opportunity to get some delicious, Tennessee barbeque.
