In today’s television age, many shows or movies have found themselves in the process of getting a spinoff. However, the process of making a spinoff is becoming questionable. When should a show make a spinoff? What characters should be involved? What should the storyline be? This process has been no different with the upcoming spinoff of Netflix’s original show, On My Block. On My Block was a show that emerged in 2018 and quickly gained popularity. The show followed four teenagers navigating their lives in Freeridge, a drug, violence, and gang infested community. The show ended its fourth and last season in October of 2021. This ending was met with a surprising announcement in December of 2021. This wouldn’t be the last of Freeridge. It was announced that On My Block would get a spinoff entitled Freeridge.

This announcement was met with some very mixed reviews. Many fans were excited to see their favorite show making a comeback, while others were questioning why the show was being made into a spin-off rather than getting renewed to settle some unsettled feelings. The fans became even more conflicted when a spinoff trailer was shown, and none of the original characters were present. The On My Block spinoff, Freeridge, is set to be released on February 2nd, 2023. It has some large shoes to fill as the expectations have been set very high for it. This spin-off has many fans wondering if sometimes leaving a show where it ends is better than making a spinoff at all.
