Pickup These 5 Skincare Tips For When Temperatures Drop

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kennesaw chapter.
It’s officially Fall! That means it’s time for pumpkin-flavored everything, cozy sweaters, and cold weather. But the shift from warm summer breezes to brisk winds can affect us in more ways than we thought.
Fall brings about a change in humidity, temperature, wind, and UV exposure that all of our bodies react differently to.

Here are five tips to keep your skin from switching up on you in this new season!

Keep your skin moisturized

Since the air is so dry, you should try to keep a barrier of moisture between you and the cold air. Thick creams and serums are ideal to use! CeraVe Moisturizing Cream, Ole Henriksen Sheer Transformation Perfecting Moisturizer, or even Vaseline work well to preventing cracking and dry skin.

Wear SPF

SPF is a girl’s best friend! Sorry diamonds, we still love you. SPF or sun protection factors, protect our epidermis layer of skin from reddening and sunburn. It’s weird to think about sunburn while it’s cold outside, but that’s when people tend to get burnt the most. SPF not only protects us from sun rays but also helps our skin age slower. That means fewer wrinkles, smile lines, and skin blemishes. My favorite SPF of the moment is Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost Water Gel with Sunscreen.

Don’t take long hot showers

I love a good hot shower, and this is the saddest news to me, but the longer you are in a hot shower, the more your skin will dry out. If you can’t give up your hot showers, like me, try staying in for a max of 5 minutes and using a nourishing body wash such as Dove Deep Moisture or Olay Ultra Moisture Shea Butter Body Wash.

Avoid alcohol-based products

Just like those hot showers, alcohol-based products can dry out your skin and strip it of healthy and necessary oils your skin needs. Try using toners and face washes that have a “creamy” or “lotion” feel. Dermalogica’s Special Cleansing Gel or CeraVe’s Hydrating Facial Cleanser is excellent alternatives to your harsher summer face washes.

Know your skin type

Knowing your skin type is vital. The number one skincare problem is people not knowing their skin type. If you have dry skin but use products made for oily skin types (products that reduce oils in the skin), your skin might start breaking out or have dry patches from being under-nourished. Visit your nearest Ulta or Sephora counter, where their specialists can help you find the best products for you.

Try incorprating some of these tips into your new Fall/Winter Skincare routines and keep that beautiful summer glow year round!
