Most people say, “New Year, new me!” but ladies, we aren’t just stepping into any ordinary year. We are about to step into a whole new decade. For me, it’s so hard to think about the last ten years of my life. So much has changed since 2009. I finished elementary, middle and high school all in the span of those 10 years. Someone please make this make sense! I don’t even remember the person I was 10 years ago, and I can’t even begin to think about the person I’ll be 10 years from now. Will I be successful? Will I be happy? Will I be fulfilling my purpose? Will I be finding my place in life? Will I still be here? Will I be forgotten?

If anyone knows me, I’m not the type of person to think 10 years from now. I can’t even think past finals week right now if I’m completely honest. But I heard something recently that has helped change my mindset. It is three simple questions to ask yourself that can help shape and challenge your goals for the upcoming years: Who you are? Who aren’t you? And Who you want to be?

Who You Are

-What are some qualities you developed that you admire?

-What is something you are good at?

-What makes you happy/fulfills you?

-Who are you when nobody is around?

Who Aren’t You

-What are some qualities that you don’t like/would want to change?

-Why do you act a certain way?

-How can you be more positive?

Who You Want To Be

-How can you influence more people/leave an impact?

-How can you grow into the person you are destined to be?

The questions don’t end here. The types of questions that can be added to this list are endless. So many things shape who we are, and that adds to our individuality and uniqueness. We should challenge ourselves to answer these questions and add on to them so that we reflect on ourselves and hopefully help us change for the better.

The woman I see for myself a decade from now is powerful. She is classy. She is educated. She is loving. She is faithful. She is passionate. She is accepting. She is creative. She is bold and confident in everything she does. She is dedicated to her dreams and her ambitions, and I hope you see some of the same things for yourself too.

Happy New Year and Welcome to the Roaring ‘20s!

My name is Jazmine Mills. I am a native of Decatur, Georgia and I'm studying Journalism and Emerging Media at Kennesaw State University. I hope to pursue a career in media and news production in the future.
