Colors, Patterns, Fabrics and Looks to Follow for Fashion Fall Trends 2012

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kean chapter.

Not long ago, the autumnal equinox passed, officially making it the fall. With the warm weather still about, it doesn’t quite feel like fall yet. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t start up with the fall fashion! Here are some trends, broken down into categories, which have been seen on the runway and soon shall be in stores. Get a head start and become the most fashionable woman on campus!

Colors:

Oxblood/ Red Wine/ Burgundy (It has lots of names):

This dark, but beautiful shade of red is to die for, and the great thing is ANYONE can wear it! It looks shockingly divine on pale skin tones and absolutely daring on dark skin tones. It can be seen all over clothes, accessories, make-up and hair. Don’t be afraid to experiment. This color is the MUST of the season.

White:
The color usually reserved for the winter, white, is starting a little early. This color is clean, crisp and pure, which will make you look just that (even if you aren’t *wink*). Maybe it’s a hint at an early snowfall this year. Either way, you are ready!

Gold:
This metallic trend is not just for the rich. It’s seen all over the runway in everything from clothing to make-up. Try just a touch of gold around the eyes, a big gold hand bag, or, if you really feel daring, a gold sequin dress!

Neutral:
This color was seen in spring, summer, and now it’s here to stay for the fall. This skin colored look is simple, yet chic. It would look especially great with a bright colored accessory!

Patterns:

Plaid:

It’s the perfect and popular trend for the fall. This look will never go out of style. Plaid is also a great pattern for bonfires, your local haunted attraction or just a cup of coffee at Starbucks. Instead of wearing just the usual flannel shirt, try wearing plaid in a different spot like a headband, skirt or boots!

Polka Dot:
Maybe it’s a little old fashion, but polka dots are in! They’re no longer just worn by the 60s house wife, but they are now worn by fashion models and celebrities. The dots are seen in every size and color, but the more popular look is black and white. This pattern is seen on dresses, shoes, jackets and even nails.

Animal:
Every Jersey girl can’t live without her animal print. Good thing for non-Jersey girls is that it’s spreading on the runway. Everything from zebra to cheetah is a growing trend. So Jersey and non-Jersey girls alike…pull out that snake skin purse or that giraffe print cardigan and flaunt it!

Pretty much any kind of print:
Yup, that’s right. You didn’t read that incorrectly. Any kind of print is in style right now. The more popular ones are listed above, but there is still floral, eastern-influenced and tribal print on the fall trends list. But that’s not all…there are still more! Mix plaid with polka dot or zebra with floral, and don’t knock it until you try it.

Fabrics:

Fur:
Toma Korgee, a senior at Kean University, knows her fashion. She recommends that everyone should have a little bit of fur in their wardrobe. Faux or real, fur is taking the runway by storm. It is seen everywhere and in every color. Dark brown jackets, bright pink purses and light white hats. Get all warm and fuzzy with fur this season!

Leather:
Here is a trend that will make other women jealous and have men drooling: leather. This sexy fabric isn’t just for the naughty girls; every girl can wear it. Leather clothing or accessories in the popular fall color “Red Wine” are greatly encouraged!

Lace:
To balance off the hard-rocker fabric of leather is the beautiful dainty fabric of lace. Even though it’s not as hardcore as leather, lace is still super sexy. Have the guys drooling by wearing a white lacy dress.

Looks:

Military:

This look is always on the runaway around the fall season and it doesn’t disappoint. The tailored pants and structured jackets with big gold buttons make any fashionista squeal in delight.

European:
A difficult look to describe, but once seen, every girl will recognize it. “She’s so European,” we all say with both admiration and disdain. It’s the long coats, dark colors, high collars and tall boots. Finish off the look with an umbrella for those rainy days!

Menswear:
Hey! It’s not just for the guys anymore. We deserve everything a guy does and more! Blazers, button up shirts, ties and loafers. We always looked better in his t-shirts anyways.

Make-Up:

Brown, Smoky Eyes:

Smokey eyes are always in. Sometimes, they are difficult to accomplish, but good thing we have Google for tutorials. This time instead of the dark, harsh black, try the soft, beautiful brown.

Bold Liners:
We always go with the simple line or cat eye with our eyeliners. That’s not very in for the fall. This season, it’s all about the eyes. Thicken that cat eye by using bright cobalt, or draw in eye lashes. All of these styles are a must for the fall.

Perfect Skin:
Sometimes, you might want to go for a simple look. “I’m not a big fan of make up, I just use foundation and smoky eyes,” Korgee said. Luckily for her, the smooth and simple skin is in! The natural look is not only easiest, but usually the best. Use a foundation or powder that is the same color as your skin tone and create smooth, flawless skin. Don’t forget the moisturizer.

Bright Blush:
A little blush can go a long way, or in this case, a lot of blush. Bright wind-burnt cheeks are in for the fall. Your face will glow with this bold color on your cheeks.

Reverse French Nail:
This new trend is popping up all over and it’s a trend that you should follow. Instead of tipping your nails with white, this “French twist” consists of choosing a fearless dark or metallic color.

Accessories:

Collar:

Cute and girly collars are one of the season’s biggest hits. They were on the runway, in magazines and now in stores. Sometimes, the collar is attached to the shirt, but now they have collars that you can buy separately and just add to your blouse. Some look like actual collars, but others are necklaces shaped like collars. Whatever you choose, you know you’ll be in fashion!

Chain Purses:
Big bags aren’t as popular as they used to be, so make room for the smaller bag! To make your small bag current with the fall fashion, look for a chain strap. The cool thing about chain straps is that many times, you can either unclip the chain or tuck the chain in your purse to make a cute clutch. A two for one deal? Yes please!

Bold Hats:
Now, we do have to thank Kate Middleton for this trend. We, American ladies, would probably not have picked up this hat trend without her wedding and fashion style. Some hats seen on the runway might seem a little extreme, but you can be sure to find some simple ones. Even new glee cast member Marley (Melissa Benoist) is following the hat trend with her gray, newsboy/girl hat.

Bedazzled ANYTHING:
Okay…so maybe not actually “bedazzled,” but a lot of accessories on the runway include big jewels, big buttons, big glitter or big studs. Just anything big and you’ll be fashionably ready for the fall. Try it on shoes, bracelets, purses and hair accessories.

At Kean University the fashion trend to follow is SCARVES! “It’s the thing right now,” Adrienne Middleton said.

Everywhere you turn, there is a Kean student with a scarf. “I like that scarves are very comfy and keep you warm when you’re cold,” Kristina Sosa, a sophomore, said. “I use them for their purpose and not just for fashion.”

Winter is approaching fast, so start wearing these trends now before it’s too late. Also, try mixing them and see what you come up with!
