A Book Review: Revenge Wears Prada

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kean chapter.

“Revenge Wears Prada” finds protagonist Andrea “Andy” Sachs contemplating her impending marriage to one of New York’s most eligible bachelors. While Sachs’ blind optimism and naivety have significantly receded in this sequel to the 2003 New York Times best-selling roman à clef “The Devil Wears Prada,” her lack of practically resurfaces when publishing giant Elias Clark offers to purchase the bridal magazine she’s built from the ground up threatening to reunite her with the formidable Miranda Priestly.

Priestly, the legendary editor-in-chief of “Runway” magazine and Sachs’ former boss, both terrifies and mystifies everyone she comes in contact with. Sachs has recurring night terrors as a result of her tenure at the magazine. Priestly drives the story. Her impending connection with the heroine is a symbol of just how far Sachs’ character has strayed from the life she wanted as a “serious journalist”.

“Revenge wears Prada” is peppered with the resurgence of both delightful and detailed characters. Former Priestly first assistant, Emily Charlton, returns as Sach’s business partner, glittery and intolerant as ever. Sachs’ best friend Lily returns, as well Runway’s creative director Nigel, too. Even more characters are along for the ride, providing a seamless transition for the reader, who devoured the first book.

Ultimately this book reinforces the themes that were exhibited by its predecessor. The choices between career and personal life, and success vs. personal integrity are right at the forefront all along. Author Lauren Weisberger paints Andrea Sachs’ journey with both glamour and sentiment, making “Revenge Wears Prada” a must read for both the fierce fashionista and the corny lover of chick flicks.
