Book Review: Book Binge, “The Honest Life”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kean chapter.

Everyone might be going green, but one actress is doing it without surrendering the glam. Jessica Alba dishes the details about her grooming, cooking and cleaning practices in her first book “The Honest Life”.

The entrepreneur, wife and mother of two, has been very vocal in the media about her aversion to potentially harmful chemicals. After giving birth to her first child, Alba and her business partner Chris Gavigan created The Honest Company in an effort to provide consumers with safe and effective personal care products. Alba was inspired to go green after becoming pregnant with her first daughter.

While one may anticipate “The Honest Life” to be an infomercial for the company’s product lines, the book actually suggests many different products, methods and resources for the health conscious consumer. It is informative, expressive and inclusive if not exactly entertaining.

Alba acknowledges that her financial situation is not the norm. Luckily, she suggests many realistic low cost options to maintaining a healthy household. While there are detailed sections on parenting, there are just as many style tips to sate those whose priorities favor pumps over pampers.

The book promotes the message of an “honest” lifestyle in an appealing way that is more cute than condescending.
