The best and most important items to keep in mind while packing for Spring Break vacation

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kean chapter.

Spring Break is finally approaching and it is the perfect time to kick back, relax, forget about school work, your part time or full time job, and just have some fun time by yourself, or with others! If you are a Spring Breaker that is going on a tropical vacation for a week, you are sooo lucky take me with you lol. If you are staying at home during Spring Break that is great too because you don’t have to worry about zooming to a store to purchase items for a go away vacation. No matter which way you decide to spend your Spring Break, there are essential fun and important items that you should carry with you.

Here is a list of some items that you should bring when traveling to an island or a cruise.

1. Passport

One very important item to carry with you on vacation is a passport. Passports are used now pretty much everywhere and in order to travel out of the country, you definitely need to purchase one. Passports are a really cool stylish item to have with you because you can add stamps on it with different places that you vist throughout the world. You can show it off to your friends when they ask “Oh where did you go for Spring Break?”

An important tip to keep in mind so you won’t forget to bring it with you before you drive to the airport, or a catch a ride to the airport, is to put a little post note on it, along with other essentials you need to have with you before you hop on that plane. The last thing you want is to leave the house be halfway to the airport, and be like “crap now I have to turn around and go back home to grab my passport!” I have seen it happen before and it just delays your time, don’t try and cause that headache for yourself!

2. Short sleeve t- shirts and tank tops

When you go to an island like Barbados, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Aruba, and etc. the weather can become extremely humid and it is important to wear comfortable clothing while walking around on little adventure trips, or just going out to eat. If you are going to a restaurant they usually have air conditioners or even fans, which can make your arms a little cold so I recommend that you wear a short sleeve shirt there, and maybe a little jacket if you are carrying one around with you. If you are going to the beach, then a tank top is the way to go especially if you are going to sit on a towel and have a picnic before you go swimming.

3. Bathing suit and towel

Before you go off to an island, or multiple island vacation, pack a pretty bathing suit. Bathing suits are definitely an essential, especially if you are a fish in the water like me. There are many different bathing suit styles that you can try depending on your preference, and your favorite designs. There are two piece bathings suits that have fringe, polka dots, flowers, funky leopard and cheetah print, plain colors, and even little frilly things on them. There are one piece bathing suits which are perfect because they are simple and really cute. They come in other patterns like the two pieces, plus solid colors. Some even have a low v-cut in the front, come strapless, or with straps depending on what you are comfortable in.

In addition to having a bathing suit, try and remember to bring a towel. Sure if you are on a cruise boat you can just use one of there’s, but wouldn’t it be 1,000 times better using your own personal decorated one? If you are into bright colors, I recommend bringing a bright color towel, and if you are into suttle colors, try to go for something with blue, or purple, even tan, and if you like patterns then go for it. There are many stores that sell towels and there are always great deals at Walmart, or Target! Don’t forget to buy sunblock lotion while your buying swimming clothes! You don’t want a sunburn!

      4. Jeans and shorts

Shorts are great to wear on a nice and sunny day on vacation. They are very comfortable and they look beautiful with whatever top and shoes you pair them with. If you are hiking though try and be careful with wearing shorts. If you are going on a hiking trip up a mountain, don’t go for shorts, try and go for an old pair of jeans. The problem with wearing shorts while doing this activity is that if you fall you have a huge chance of scraping off some skin on your legs and your cut will get infected. If you wear jeans, you can at least keep the wound covered, until you get access to a first aid kit, or a cleaning wipe.

Jeans are also great to wear at night while on an island. Although in the day time the weather is sticky hot, at night the weather can get a bit windy. Plus you also want to be careful with mosquitoes. If you are going to a club at night jeans are the perfect bottom to be paired with a nice glamorous top, and some sandals or heels.

      5. Dresses

Dresses are a must bring item on a cruise because they have captain dinner nights. Captain dinner nights is when everyone on the boat is required to dress up and they get to take pictures with the captain of the ship. I have been on cruises where people go as far as wearing a big princess dress, which is just way too much unless you are going to a ball. The best route to go in the dress category is for something elegant, but not too big. You want to be able to move without feeling funny in your dress. Some colors you can try for an elegant dress are black, purple, white, cream, red, blue, or pink.

Some items that you can pack while having a Spring Break vacation at home.

      1. Movies

Movies are pretty much everyone’s favorite thing to watch and it is a great way to just have a fun time when you are alone, with your boyfriend, or with friends. Try and have yourself a mini movie date, I give myself one of these quite often. Peek through your movie collection and choose one that you love the most, order some food, drink some wine, champagne, or the classic movie drink soda, and just have a great time.

If you are single you can whistle at the cute guys on television! If you are having a date night with your bf then try to still order some food to your home, or cook something, and watch the film together, you can even do the same things with your friends!

      2. Sleepover (you can pack this, although it may not seem like it lol)

This may sound funny because you probably had your last sleepover in elementary school, or high school, but there is no problem with having a grown up sleepover with your friends! Get out of your house pack some of your pajama’s, a robe, hair items, feminine items, shoes, and some clothes for the next day and crash at your friends house! Buy some food, along with some desserts, and just gossip all night long.

Also the beauty of being older when you have a sleepover, is that you don’t have to play kiddy games, like “Chutes and Ladders”, and “Candyland” unless you want to. You can play more adult games that deal with sexual related questions, you can play strip poker (if you are into that). You can even play technology advanced games on control systems like the Wii. They have like a billion Wii games, okay well maybe not a billion, but still there is a lot. There are dance games like Zumba, they have sports ones that feature games like tennis, baseball, etc. They also have yoga if you like to meditate.

      3. Tropical or fruity smelling lotion

Are you into lotions that have fruity smells just like I do? If you are into these lotions then check out the ones at Bath and Body Works. If you have never been into Bath and Body Works, it has a large collection of lotions, sprays, and shower gels for ladies, as well as other fun products. One lotion in particular that I tried that has a tropical delicious smell is called “ Pure Paradise.” I walked into Bath and Body Works earlier this week and the sales woman came up to me and asked what I was looking for? I explained that I wanted a fruit smelling lotion for my skin and she immediately went over to a shelf to pull out “Pure Paradise”. Once I smelled it I thought “omg that smells amazing” I even told the woman, she smiled and laughed.

Just because you are not going on a trip to an island, does not mean you can’t bring “paradise” to you. I brought Spring Break to myself without even going somewhere and you can do the same!

      4. Some new ladies underwear

This may sound kind of awkward, but hey everyone has moments where they want to add some new pieces to their undies drawer. Victoria Secret constantly has new collections of undies, especially new panties and bras. Bras typically change for women, especially as they get older and its annoying having to use ones that don’t support you like they should. Victoria Secret has bras that are push up, strapless if you want to hide the straps under a dress, or with a particular top, they even have ones where you can cross the straps in a inventive way, like in a X shape.

For panties they have different kinds like boy shorts (which are fun to use), high waist, bikini style, and many more.

If Victoria Secret bras do not work for you, and you have a bigger size, try and go for Playtex bras. I usually buy these, and they can be expensive, like around $20, but they offer a ton of support and will make you feel perfect in any top that you wear. They also last quite a few years with very little rips after washing them.

      5. Great book

If you are a huge reader like me, try and keep a great book with you at all times. If you are staying indoors during Spring Break and just want to hang out in your room for a day, pull out a book from your personal collection. Read your book in your reading chair, or lay down in your bed, put your pillow behind your head, cover yourself with a blanket and read.

I can read all day and when I get so caught up in a great book, I feel like I transitioned into the time and place of the story. It feels like you are taking a mini vacation, while staying still in your bed.

I hope you keep some of these ideas in mind during your Spring Break. They work for me, so they should work for you too!
