Back to School: Class Essentials

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kean chapter.

Hello Kean Her Campus Collegettes! Welcome back to Kean University Fall 2013 semester! Are you excited to be back to school? Or would the better question be, are you ready to be back to school?

I would hope so since we’ve been back at school for about two weeks. But maybe you’re still in the summer break mood and are feeling the back-to-school blues. No worries, Her Campus Kean is here to help you get ready and excited for classes. And what better way to get excited then with new and chic school supplies?

Statement Backpack

You’ll probably be walking around campus going from class to class with your books. Instead of carrying your heavy load in your hands, why not set them free with a backpack that’s completely you? Check out our article about the backpacks seen last year on campus for some inspiration or see what is going on in fashion to find a backpack that suits you.

For example, this galaxy backpack from Victoria’s Secret is a great way to show your unique-ness and style. Galaxy or space patterns can be seen everywhere and they’re so cool. Don’t you want people to compliment you by saying your stuff is “out of this world?” (Too corny?)

Although Kean campus isn’t that big, the long walk to class can be annoying if you’re carrying your books from point A to point B. A backpack is just the thing to help you carry your supplies and keep your hands free to wave to friends, text the boyfriend, or have a casual walk.

Cute Tumbler Mug

Early classes can be really annoying, especially when you have to commute. You need to wake up even earlier to be sure you don’t hit traffic and have a parking spot. That’s why a thermos for your coffee, or tea if you’re like me, is great for a quick pick me up.

You can find some really cute tumblers at Starbucks or online, if you want to find some deals. Also online, there are so many styles available that you’ll be sure to find one that is perfect for you!

The great thing about getting a tumbler mug is that not only do you get to choose the style you want, but you also get to save the environment and your money. By making your coffee at home, you save money by buying in bulk rather than paying for your coffee to be made each time. You also don’t have to throw away your paper cup to be added to the landfill. Instead, you can reuse your tumbler over and over.

Comfy Shoes

Having comfy shoes to walk around in is so important, especially when you have a busy day of walking. If you only have to walk from your car to a classroom and back then wearing your fashionable shoes that kill your pinky toe would be fine since you’re sitting around for the most part.

However, if you have to walk from building to building and classroom to classroom then it’s better for you to wear shoes that are comfy. And that doesn’t mean sneakers, though you can definitely find cute sneakers. Loving the neon and bright colored sneakers trend! You can also find comfy flats, heels, and wedges too!

Pencil Case Fully Loaded

This is a must! You need to write down your notes and homework don’t you? Carrying around your pens in your backpack, purse, or pockets just will not do. You don’t want to be throwing everything out of your bag just to find a pen.

A pencil case that has pens, pencils, erasers, and highlighters will keep you organized and prepared for all situations. That includes the cute guy next to you who forgot his pen. No need to embarrass yourself by scrounging around for an extra. With your handy-dandy pencil case, you’ve got everything covered.

A cool design or a pop of color on your case will also make you stand out from the rest, making you look cute while handing him a writing utensil. Letting him keep the pen or not is up to you.

Emergency Sewing Kit

Okay, maybe this isn’t an essential, but you never know when you might need to quickly sew up a rip in your pants or pin your broken bra strap together. It’s always when you don’t want a mishap to happen that it does. Being prepared by having a sewing kit in your arsenal couldn’t hurt.

Be sure that your sewing kit has needles, a little pair of scissors, at least black and white thread, and safety pins. You can create a kit yourself or check out one of your local stores to buy one. I know I got mine at Walmart for $5 with even more than the fore mentioned.

Amazon Prime

If anything on this list is the most important essential, it is this! Yes it’s not the most fashionable item, but it can get you fashionable items.

For those of you who don’t know, Amazon Prime is a program with the Amazon website that allows you to do two day shipping, for free. If you need an item right away, many items on Amazon’s website can be sent to you in just two days. There is a discount for one day shipping too!

Now, you normally need to pay for Amazon Prime, but with your .edu email address you can get Amazon Prime for six months for free! Then, once that is over, Amazon Prime is offered to you for half price. It’s a great deal that is totally worth it. Just be sure you get Amazon Prime at the right time, you won’t want your six months to run out when you need it so choose wisely.
