Since I moved to university, I have been keeping in touch with a friend back home by sending a few thoughts I’ve had during the week. I’ve shared some things I’ve cooked, what I’ve been up to, and what I’m looking forward to in the future. I’ve found it such a fun way to catch up, and have enjoyed looking back on my initial thoughts during my first few weeks of university. I thought I would share my thoughts from this week (February 15th to February 21st):

  • Lotus Biscoff has a spread which is honestly one of the nicest things I’ve ever had. It’s such a struggle to not eat it directly from the jar.

  • I find grocery shopping oddly therapeutic and can easily spend quite a while looking at all the new things available. I feel like this is a very old lady kind of hobby.

  • Speaking of old ladies, I realised that next year I will be 20 (and one of my friends will be 21). I honestly feel like a child and not capable of adulting at all. I remember when I was younger thinking 16 was so old (after watching 16 and pregnant) and now I’m rapidly approaching my 20’s!

  • I bought some flowers for my flat kitchen and I feel like it brightens the place up so much. I don’t have a vase so I have put them in my hydroflask!

  • Having made a successful batch of pitta bread last week, I decided to make another one this weekend and they came out so well. I don’t think I’ll buy store bought pitta again. When I was in secondary school everything I baked somehow came out really badly, so I’m quite happy. I also don’t have a rolling pin so I used my hydroflask (#multi-tasking).

  • I have been looking at my photos from a year ago today and have been reminiscing quite a bit about life pre-covid. I am so jealous of my past self! I went on a winter beach trip and I can’t imagine doing all the activities I did then anytime soon (sitting on a crowded bus, standing in a long line for pizza and ice cream).

  • Having watched nine and a half seasons of Real Housewives of Atlanta I am feeling my brain cells slowly dying, so have been watching a few documentaries. My favourite has been about the mysterious death of Elisa Lam which was simultaneously intriguing and heartbreaking. I would definitely recommend it.

  • Since I moved to university, it’s been a few people’s birthdays back in America, and I’ve been really enjoying sending people surprise cards. Despite the fact that postage tends to cost more than the actual card itself, I’ve been really enjoying picking out a card and writing a message.

  • I have lived in England for the majority of my life, and I only realised the other day that the pattern on the tube seats is the London skyline. I have thought for years that it was just abstract art.

Helena is a first year at King's College London, studying global health. Though her family lives in New Jersey, she grew up in South West London. In her free time, she loves creative writing, making too much pitta bread and watching true crime documentaries. She loves sunny weather and is always looking for an excuse to head to the beach.
