My Favorite DIY Skin Care Treatments

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JWU chapter.

In college, a time of sleepless nights and greenless plates, it’s always important to try and keep yourself healthy and hygienic. What better way to do so than DIY skin treatments

These are the four most used DIY skincare treatments I use that target the four main problem areas of the face; blackheads, dry lips, dry skin, and dark undereye bags.

  1. Blackhead Removal – Unflavored Gelatin + Milk1 tbsp. unflavored gelatin powder, 1 1/2 tbsp. Milk, Microwave for 10-15 seconds, Apply to Blackhead-ridden area till hardened (2-3 mins), then peel off gently, (As seen in Darla Ferrara’s Article here). This is one of my personal favorites because of how easy it is. I’m a naturally lazy person so any kind of life hack is greatly appreciated by yours truly. So, when I came across Darla Ferrara’s blackhead removal recipe using only two ingredients, I could’ve jumped for joy. I didn’t of course, because that would mean I would have to move from my bed.

  1. Lip Scrub – Brown Sugar + Honey1 tbsp. Brown sugar, just enough honey to make it stick together, (As seen in Claire Goodall’s article here). I love this recipe so much, I will swear to it till this world comes to a Trump-induced end! It’s great for lips that are still recovering from this possibly chapstick-less winter season. The recipe can be found in Claire Goodall’s article cited above!

  1. Hydrating Face Mask – Avocado + Coconut Oil½ Avocado (Make sure it’s ripe)! 1 tsp. Coconut oil, OPTIONAL – ½ tsp. Honey, (As seen in L. Bee’s article here). It’s safe to say, personally, I would heavily consider selling my first born child for a lifetime supply of coconut oil.You can use for pretty much everything, from taking your makeup off to cooking with it. It’s pretty much the jack of all trades of overpriced, organic products. Nonetheless, this mask is a great treatment to do right before you hop in the shower and L. Bee has a great recipe on her blog post cited above.

  2. Under Eye Bag Relief – Green Tea + Coconut Oil + Honey + Cucumber

1 cup brewed green tea, 1 cup cucumber, 2 tbsp. Coconut oil, 2 tbsp. honey, Blend till a cream, Soak cotton pads in mixture, Apply cotton pads to under eye area, (As seen in NIna Le’s article here).

This treatment has a few more steps than usual involved but it’s my personal favorite because of how well it works. I have trouble managing my under eye bags due to my usual bedtime of around 3:30 AM on days of the week ending in –y. NIna Le has a great recipe in her article that I’ll always tell my friends about.

I like writing words on the internet and sleeping till 3 in the afternoon.
