It only took hearing a few seconds of the song “Litost” before I got hooked on the X Ambassadors. The New York-based band took over Taylor Down Under this past Wednesday night with a concert that was part of the JMU University Program Board’s Spotlight Series. The band is currently on tour with Imagine Dragons and Panic! at the Disco, and are also promoting their recently released EP, The Reason. You may have even heard the Eminem track they were recently featured on, called “Wicked Ways.”

Local band the Matt Sedivy Trio opened for the group, and then X Ambassadors took the stage. Opening with the groovy “Down With Me, ” their infectious energy and enthusiasm soon had the entire room standing and singing along. The intimate setting was crowded with students all suited with colorful glowsticks, some even standing on couches and chairs. They have a unique sound that can be described as alternative rock, with a hip-hop and R&B vibe. They incorporate a variety of instruments into their music, ranging from an acoustic guitar to the saxophone and thunderous drums.

They played all of the songs off their new EP and many older fan favorites, such as the “Litost” and “Unconsolable.” Lead singer Sam Harris has a great range and a raw aspect to his voice that’s enjoyable to listen to. By far, the most powerful song of the night was the upbeat and soulful “Stranger.” After ending with “The Business,” the band began to walk off stage. However, students wanted more and after persistent chants demanding one more song, the band returned to the stage and finished with an inspiring performance of “Brother.” Harris then met with fans to sign autographs and take pictures. Overall, the concert was fun to watch and definitely a treat for long-time fans of the band!
