Even though Valentine’s Day is intended to be a day celebrating love and expressing appreciation for the people in our lives, I feel as if we overlook ourselves. V-Day is the perfect way to get in that much-needed “me time” that seems to fall by the wayside with schoolwork, organizations and other activities. So, I proclaim Valentine’s Day to be a day of self-love, regardless of your relationship status. Here are the top five ways to indulge yourself on V-Day…

5. Work That Body. Hit the gym, do some Insanity or P90x, or even brush up on some dance moves (Zumba YouTube videos)! When you work out, chemicals such as endorphins, dopamine and serotonin are released, which essentially means you’re going to feel exhilarated and happy afterward. Personally, I have always wanted to take a pole dancing class because it’s rumored to be a great workout. (Harrisonburg’s Inner Goddess Studios offers an array of exotic and pole dancing classes to bring some “Sexy Back” into your life).

4. Read. Yes, you should read — but not just anything required for school. If there’s a book you have been dying to read, but just haven’t had the time to do so, now is the time to at least start! It doesn’t even have to be a book; it could be your favorite magazine. Fashion magazines are the perfect way to strategically plan out your new spring wardrobe.

3. Treat Yourself. Today is the day to curl up with your favorite chocolates or a pint of Ben & Jerry’s (those guys are always reliable). No, this does not make you appear sad and pathetic. You are a beautifully awesome collegiette who deserves a sugar rush every once in a while. However, if you would prefer a different kind of sugar rush, I would recommend having an eye-candy marathon. Buy or rent the movies or television series your celebrity crushes star in.

2. Have a Spa Day. Beautify yourself, just because. Today is the day to splurge! If that means getting a spray tan, your nails done, a facial (or all of the above) go for it! I know that not all of us have money to blow at a salon, but there are tons of DIY and home remedies to look into — and you will feel like a million bucks afterward.

1. Your Bucket List. Everyone must have a bucket list (if you don’t have one, make one). Though, the only thing I have noticed about most people and their bucket lists is that they have one, but don’t really ever do anything about it. This needs to change. Start crossing those suckers off today! Get that piercing or meaningful tattoo you’ve been thinking about for the last year, go hike a mountain, streak the quad or take a day trip to somewhere you have never been! Whatever it may be — big or small — if it’s something you find worth doing, it should be done.

Valentine’s Day shouldn’t exclusively be for those who are in love. V-Day is the day to take yourself out on a date. It’s the day to put yourself first — for once — to figure out who you truly are and what you want out of your own life. And let me just say, whoever started the trend of buying themselves flowers and chocolate was onto something! However, there is no need to add a fake secret admirer note. Be your own biggest admirer and do Valentine’s Day right.
