Top 5 Best Netflix Original Christmas Movies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

Are Netflix Originals becoming the next Hallmark movies and taking over the title of best chessy, predictable, and adictive Christmas movies? Well, maybe… I know that’s a bold statement, but Netflix does have some pretty amazing Christmas movies you should watch this holiday season.

Christmas Prince

This movie is predictable and cliche, but in all the right ways. Young journalist, Amber, is sent to the beautiful kingdom of Aldovea to report on the rebellious new king (prince Harry anyone?) When she gets mistaken as the Princesses tutor she plays along to get closer to the royal family in hopes that it will help her article. This movie has a beautiful christmas scenery, as well as betrayal, royal balls, and romance. It is a must watch, and if you love the one there are two more to follow.

Princess Switch

Not only does Vanessa Huggens play the leading lady in the holiday movie, but there are two of her! In traditional parent trip fashion, a  baker from Chicago meets a princess from a far away land. They decided to switch places for a couple of days and experience life like the others. Shockingly enough, they both fall in love with their new role and make things much more complicated for themselves than necessary. It is funny, sweet, and truly an adorable Christmas movie.

Holiday in the Wild

This Holiday movie is unlike the others. CHristmas hasn’t exploded on the screen like many of the other Netflix Originals and we get what I call the “Home Alone” style Christmas movie. Rather than the holidays being the all consuming storyline, this movie simply takes place around Christmas. While the holidays are present, we get to see Kate, a new empty nester mom, find love for the wild in Africa on what was supposed to be her “second honeymoon.” This movie left me in tears and it truly touching.

Holiday Calendar

This movie takes a much more modern spin on a traditional Christmas movie. There are no princes, so rich parents, no elves (well, no elves from the north pole) but there are romantic gestures, holiday gifts, and time spent with family. If you are looking for the least cliche movie, this is the one for you. There is still a love triangle where one guy gets friendzoned, a children’s christmas play, and some christmas magic, but all in the real world, not a royal kingdom or the north pole.

Christmas Inheritance

This movie reminds me of something London Tipton would have needed back in the day. Rich daughter of the CEO, Ellen, is asked to deliver a letter to her father’s old co-worker. There is one requirement, it must be hand delivered to him. When the friend fails to show up and Ellen gets showed into the small town of Snow Falls (fitting name, right?) she learns that the true spirit of Christmas is less about the expensive gifts and parties and vacations, but rather about love and community and helping others (wow she sounds kind of like the Grinch, but one who loved Christmas from the start). This movie is full of romance, community love, and of course, cliches, but is a must watch this holiday season.
