Every weekend, many students at JMU stumble into their dorms or apartments after a long night of partying and drinking. Others choose to stay at home and play games or watch movies with friends. While this is a personal choice, the students choosing to stay sober are now offered prizes and rewards for keeping alcohol out of their systems. The Office of Residence Life initiated a new program this year entitled “Sober October, Remember November” to provide alternatives for those who choose not to drink.

Any JMU student who lives on campus (though if you don’t, you can still try and participate!) is invited to sign up at their RA’s office to stay sober throughout the months of October and November. Once a student signs up, they receive an orange wristband, which signifies the promise they intend to portray (as well as allows them to earn some free stuff!)

Different exciting activities are held throughout the two months, such as free movies at Grafton, volleyball and basketball tournaments, football tailgates, a Halloween party at UREC, and much more. October and November become some of the busiest months for drinking, due to all of the exciting events the months host: Homecoming, Parent’s Weekend, Halloween, Thanksgiving, as well as midterm stress!

Students who stay sober regularly say there aren’t enough activities for those who choose not to drink. The program is not only for those who have been sober for a long time; some with drinking problems in the past are pledging to help change their attitudes about alcohol. Because it is midterm season, the party scene can even more so cause poor academic achievements. Participating in this program not only lowers your BAC, but lowers your chances of doing badly on a test or quiz.

“JMU has this negative reputation as a party school. I think this pledge will raise awareness of the fact that some people on this campus can control themselves and find other ways to have fun on the weekend,” says JMU freshman Janine Lancke.

It’s not too late to take the pledge. Talk with your RA to sign up and check out the Facebook page for more information. Together we can promote safe, alcohol-free fun!
