Over the years, I have gained a wealth of knowledge on the subject that makes some throw their hands up in the air and others cringe at the thought of spending it with their dog on the couch. I’m an expert at staying home over break, and let me tell you – it was a tough hit for my social status when I came back to school from spring break as the only kid in my elementary school class without cornrows to show off my Caribbean vacation.

However, I’ve come to terms with it, and now I embrace it. For those of you stuck in colder weather this break, I’m going to convince you to cheer alongside those who are hopping on a plane to the Bahamas because, lucky for you, I have some ideas that may help you salvage your break!

“Girl look at that body, I work out”
We all set really high expectations for our new year’s resolutions. I know that I told myself I would be at UREC every day in preparation for spring break. I guess sitting in the lobby downstairs doing my homework and watching people climb the rock wall is a start to my work out plan, right? Well, one idea for you’re soon to be exciting break at home can be working out! Collegiettes, hitting the gym at home is a great way to get back into a consistent work out schedule that you can carry over to school when it starts up again!

“Where dem girls at?”

It’s not easy to stay in touch with friends from home, especially during midterms and chaotic college schedules. Set aside some time to make phone calls to friends that you have fallen out of touch with. And hey, if they are still in school and they are close enough to visit, there’s that perfect opportunity you have been waiting for to visit them and check out their campus. Grab lunch or spend the weekend together catching up!

“I’m so, I’m so, I’m so proud of you”
Alright, so this isn’t the greatest song to go along with this idea, but I’m thinking Drake would be proud if you planned ahead and organized for the remainder of the semester. Even better, SO proud if you worked on setting up a summer internship or job!

“Don’t feel like picking up my phone, so leave a message at the tone ‘cause today I swear I’m not doing anything… nothing at all”
Doing “nothing” over break can be just what you need! Spend break relaxing with family. Midterms are finally over which means now you can throw on Moxie sweats, get sleep and catch up on American Idol re-runs (I’m totally joking, is that still even aired on Fox? I stopped watching when Kelly Clarkson won). As cliche as it sounds, hanging out with family is time well spent!

“We laid a lot of memories down, like tattoos on this town”
Plan a day trip! Go on an outing somewhere you haven’t been in a while. The city, a local concert, try out a new restaurant – and if you’re feeling adventurous, hiking!  I know, I sound like your mom… but you get the idea. And for all you concert fanatics out there – tis’ the season for summer tour release dates! Keep an eye on Ticketmaster and Live Nation for upcoming shows!

“It’s a smile, it’s a kiss, it’s a sip of wine… it’s summertime”
If your break overlaps with your friends – have your own beach day! If you’re like me and live up north where it’s not exactly beach weather, you’ll really have to use your imagination. Just because you aren’t somewhere tropical for spring break doesn’t mean you won’t be hitting the beach in just a few short months- so why not get in the mood right now!

Here are a few ideas for a mock-beach day:

  • Get a spray tan
  • Make fun drinks and fruit smoothies
  • Pamper yourself and go to the nail salon for a manicure and pedicure (Pick summer colors! My favorite Essie colors are: Bahama mama, Fiji, and Jamaica me crazy)
  • Read one of your favorite books that you always bring to the beach
  • Sync that summer playlist back onto your iPod (Throwbacks always make everything better – specifically ‘Summer Girls’ by LFO, am I right?)
  • Head over to the mall and browse this season’s bathing suits and sunglasses
  • Pull the summer clothes box out from under your bed
