A Single Girl’s Guide to Surviving Valentines Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

It’s Valentine’s Day and you are single. Really really single. Like so painfully single that your friends in relationships awkwardly invite you to third wheel on their dates. But that typically leaves you as the camera-man, snapping very posed candids of their mushy beautiful relationship.

Don’t be that third wheel this year, instead, take charge of your day! Here are some ideas to get your planning started:

Pick out an outfit that makes you feel really pretty and get all dolled up!

You don’t have to wear this all day (Especially when it’s time to get lazy and you just wanna veg out on the couch), but it will boost your mood and your confidence when you are walking around rocking that new shirt you’ve been saving. This is a special occasion, dress for it! You could also use today to try out a new hair or makeup style that you may have been too afraid to try out before. You have no-one to impress but yourself, so if it’s really horrible wipe it off and try again. There are  no rules today.

Practice self-care.

You are a beautiful, amazing woman and you don’t need a boyfriend to remind you of that. Remind yourself! Spend the day doing little things for yourself like putting on a facemask or taking a hot bath with a LUSH bath bomb. As long as its something that relaxes you there is really no wrong answer. For me, relaxation is painting my nails and laying on the couch in my pjs to aggressively binge watch New Girl. Invite some friends over and get your relaxation on!

FOOD.

Get your girlfriends together and decide on a recipe for dinner (remember, calories don’t count today). If you are planning in advance you could always reserve a table at your favorite dive bar or that nice downtown restaurant you’ve been eyeing for weeks. If you are anything like me, you’d rather spend galentines day on your couch stuffing your face with Oreos. We are all different. For those who want to spend the evening at home, pick a meal to cook and have everyone contribute with ingredients and sides. Dessert is required, so make sure to plan for that too. My go-to special occasion desserts are Slutty brownies with vanilla ice-cream. Look it up, I promise you won’t be disappointed. But also be prepared for the sugar coma that will most definitely follow!

Treat yo self!

I know I have a bad habit of moping around on valentines day when I’m single because there’s no-one to treat me to simple little things. This happens to be a huge problem since one of my love languages is gift giving! I love to give and receive gifts. But there is a really simple solution to this problem that it has taken me 20 years to figure out. TREAT YOURSELF. Been looking at the same necklace every time you walk by the pandora store? Treat yourself! You work hard every day and deserve to feel spoiled every now and then. If no-one else is gonna do it, do it for yourself. Buy yourself some flowers for your nightstand that are your favorite color so you’ll smile every time you walk in your room. Make sure you show yourself a little love. Also show other people love. I love showering people with small things that show how much I care. Bake some cookies for your neighbors, make cards for your friends. It’s the little things that go a long way.

Throw your very own Gal-entines day celebration with some of your closest gal pals!

Get a group together and cook dinner or spend the night playing a competitive game of cards against humanity with wine in hand! One of my favorite ways to spend galentines day is making a list of empowering chick-flicks and watching them all night long. Tailor activities to your group of friends and get ready for a fun night!

Valentine’s day can feel like a bummer for girls who aren’t in a committed relationship but it doesn’t have to. Go into the day feeling empowered and ready to have an amazing day!
